I heard my 10 year old discussing afikomen presents with his friend and his friend mentioned that he doesn’t get afikomen presents! I couldn’t believe this! I never heard of this before! How can a parent deprive his child of the epic passover experience of choosing his dream gift! How else will our children learn to make decisions if not starting them young? My children know that this is the one opportunity a year to ask for thier hearts desire (besides Hannukah of course!) they know that i’ll get it for them!

My father always gave 50 cents for the Afikomen, then again my parents set $10 limits on birthday and Chanukah gifts, These things were just not that important to waste large amounts of money on.
The first time I attended a Seder at a friends house when I was about 12 (mom was in the hospital) I was shocked to see the kids demanding large gifts from their father to ransom the Afikomen. I don’t like it.
Our grandchildren get a book or small toy, that’s enough. And with all Pesach costs, it’s not about the moneyApril 6, 2017 8:06 am at 8:06 am #1251788TheGoqParticipantI agree it does not have to be a large gift but i think the funnest part for the kinder is the negotiating with the tatte and the zaide.

I would be very surprised if someone could give a valid explanation and/or source for the minhag.

“Binareinu uvizkeineinu nelech”April 6, 2017 10:17 am at 10:17 am #1251944MenoParticipantSo in this case, who is MRA”H and who is Paraoh?
April 6, 2017 11:29 am at 11:29 am #1252007iacisrmmaParticipantI hide the afikomen the first night. The present? The “finder” gets to hide it the second night. No need to negotiate.

The source of my post above is my tired brain and nothing more.* This is in honor of certain CR posters who take everything literally, even when that requires the mental manipulations of an acrobat spiraling off a trapeze.
