I wouldn’t say you HAVE to read the hebrew newspaper, but to adapt (unless you are rich and your husband has millions of dollars and kept his job) you have got to really adapt.
You need to immerse yourself in the hebrew. From my expiricence as I mentioned above, I ended up the first year dumped into an all israeli high school…since there were no other english speaking girls my age in the entire city. I GOT IMMERSED IN IT.
But if you have only hebrew speaking neighbors, live in a hebrew speaking area-don’t push yourself too hard. conversational hebrew is much easier for most people.
I still have trouble on my bagruts after being here 3 years but some of my best friends speak hebrew, and I can’t switch to english because they don’t KNOW it.
There were times our family didn’t have electricity for a week. My parents took months finding a job and we survived on nefesh binefesh money as we had none in savings. You can only get to Israel through hardships. How far are you willing to go? If that happened to you, could you do it? If you had to move every six months since you couldn’t find a good apartment, could you do it? If you had to be a janotor instead of a CEO, could you do it???
Be prepared.

If you’re taking bagruyot after only being here 3 years, you should be entitled to some leniencies – either taking them orally, or getting extra points added to your score.
