A friend of mine figured out which poster was me last night.
Do your friends know who you are? Has this happened to you? Does it happen to you often? How do you react?
(I’m pleased, btw. 🙂 )May 1, 2013 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #955782
Most of my friends know my screen name. Whenever I see someone on the site, I’ll be all like, “Guess which one is me!” and they’ll be like, “OneOfMany, duhhhhh *eyeroll*.”May 1, 2013 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #955783
I don’t hide it from my friends. Except my CR friends, hee hee.May 1, 2013 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #955784

Torah- on of my friends asked my if I’m Gamanit a while ago because of my post about gebrokts… She said that post was so your type- did you by any chance write it? She was the only one that guessed before she knew that I went by this screen name.May 1, 2013 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #955786

Do your IRL friends generally agree with you that you are a horrible rasha, or are they like us and disagree?May 1, 2013 9:49 pm at 9:49 pm #955787
OOM: I can just imagine. 🙂
PBA: True for most of us.
Gamanit: I think we know each other but I’m waiting for the next time I see you to ask you. 🙂May 1, 2013 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #955788

Considering I haven’t posted anything along those lines in at least half a year…
In any event, I don’t know what other people think. I don’t generally go around asking people “What do you think of me?”

I’m so curious!!May 1, 2013 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #955790
Some very kind folks in the CR helped my family a little while ago, which they did with the help of my rebbi. I guess those particular people had to learn a bit more about who I am in real life, but the result was some very sorely needed help, and so I can’t say I was too upset. 🙂May 1, 2013 10:42 pm at 10:42 pm #955791
Popa, who knows you better, your CR friends or your RL friends?May 1, 2013 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #955792
David Bar-Magen, did things improve for you yet?May 1, 2013 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #955793
Hey, Shraga18, thanks for asking.
Things are still very difficult, but I’m keeping my head up and trying to make the best of it. Can’t say it’s ever easy, but I have my health and my family, b”H.May 1, 2013 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm #955794
I stopped coming here about a year back for a bunch of reasons, one of which was that my friend figured out who I was. It was completely my fault, as I idiotically posted the same thing, with the same wording, both on here and in a different forum under my own name- honestly, I was surprised it took that long.
Personally, I like my anonymity. While a good detective could probably figure out who I am, I doubt anyone’s interested enough to do so, so that’s okay with me.
This friend stopped posting but still lurks, and when I was home sick and posted about how bored I was, she then emailed me to say refuah sheleimah and offer me shiurim like someone mentioned on the thread :). I have no idea what she thinks of my other posts, though.May 1, 2013 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #955795
when i was still new, 2 of my friends figured me out, though one was my fault for raving about the poetry thread to her. I was quite unhappy, as i was using the cr as an anonymous place to vent and share without ppl learning more than i wanted them to know abt it. It was also uncomfortable to speak to them right after, esp if they’d mention s/t i’d written but not told them.
Now 3 more friends know who i am, but i don’t mind it. I do thhink i gave myself away to someone last week, and i’m not so comfortable or happy with them reading some of my older posts. The anonymity was what brought me here and made the cr a good and safe outlet for my emotions.May 2, 2013 12:36 am at 12:36 am #955796
I always mentioned my city so when my husband had surgery and we posted his name for tefillos anyone who knew me, knew my screen name. I don’t care because I try to be real and if I want to be personal I have an unused screen name reserved for that.
The only time I mind is when I want to seek advice on a community/school issue and can’t because it would be Lashon Hora to those who know the ‘players’.May 2, 2013 12:53 am at 12:53 am #955797

I noticed and thanks for stopping. Has it had any impact on your life?May 2, 2013 2:40 am at 2:40 am #955799
Popa: That’s so interesting.
I think people in real life know me better, but they tend to see me in one context at a time, while on the internet people get to see my opinions on a lot of different topics.
Gamanit: sorry 🙂 it might be a while before I’m in your part of town.May 2, 2013 3:02 am at 3:02 am #955800
I don’t hide who I am from my RL friends. And most of them also occasionally see what I put online also…

I don’t try to hide, but there is a necessary minimum of discretion, and it makes me very happy when a friend figures it out.May 2, 2013 3:50 am at 3:50 am #955803
Some of my friends have figured out who I am because of my extreme political views. I also figured out who a couple of people are here but I don’t know them personally.May 2, 2013 3:59 am at 3:59 am #955804
Yes, at once I was completely anonymous, it felt so good to be able to express my inner feelings freely to the world at large. Then one day I posted something that blew my cover, a relative who also posts here found me out. Not a happy day for me..May 2, 2013 4:10 am at 4:10 am #955805
Who cares? I don’t even care if e/o here knew my real name, as long as e/o posted their real name. Why does e/o need to hide behind a SN?May 2, 2013 8:35 am at 8:35 am #955806

Actually, I am very clever about it. My friends know I’m on the CR, so I can’t deny that. But I can deny who I am.
So I tell them I’m syag. They all think I’m syag.May 2, 2013 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #955811

HaLeiVi- do you mean to ask if he is different enough in real life for someone not to know he’s lying after the first post?May 2, 2013 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #955816
Yups! Was really cute. I was wondering if you’d spell my name right, because a lot of people get it wrong. I guess you figured it out…May 2, 2013 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm #955817
He said they know him better, so I guess he’s different.
Also, if he can convince friends that Syag is him then they really don’t know him. But his first one sounded true.May 2, 2013 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #955818

David Bar-M, I inquired nothing about your personal information, and know nothing. I hope that you were helped by whatever small help we were able to give.
As to knowing friends figuring out, well, by now most of you know that I became reunited with a long ago friend when I figured out who she was. Love this site!May 3, 2013 12:39 am at 12:39 am #955822
Syag: I am curious about everyone’s identity.May 3, 2013 3:08 am at 3:08 am #955823
I guess there are a few posters of whom I would be curious to know their “scoop”, but, generally speaking,if I find out that Sam2 is Shmuely Wollenberger from LasVegas, I still won’t know who he is. Kind of like when a friend gets engaged and you ask, “to who?”, even though the name usually doesn’t mean a thing to you.
I think pictures might be fun to see though.May 3, 2013 5:02 am at 5:02 am #955824

I do know a few of the posters here and they know me(and of course I know my kids sns but they haven’t posted in a while). I am very curious to know if I know any others, or if others know me.
Haifagirl, I’m one of those who haven’t figured out who you are yet? In fact I asked another poster but she doesn’t know either. I am sooo curious. How long have you been away from chicago?
Syag – if ur afraid to ask for opinions because ppl will know who the main players are, why don’t you use ur other (unused)screen name for that?May 3, 2013 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm #955828
who says I didn’t?May 3, 2013 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #955829
I’m not sure, but I think Syag is Joseph. Am I right?May 3, 2013 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #955830
Syag: Interesting. Not everyone comes out good in pictures, but it does give you an idea. I agree that just knowing a name isn’t helpful, but it would be interesting to be able to put things in context.
