the ones that do know it firsthand show it to their friends, they use it in a school play dance or something, & eventually most girls have seen that type of dancing even if you think they never would. & they think it's normal because they don't even know where it's coming from. i've seen this more than once - it's sad, & they don't realize it.

    believer: oomis isn't a guy!!!

I am Oomis, and I am definitely a lady, and a terrific (not merely great)Bubby, in my humble (gotta be honest) opinion. I am a middle-aged woman, just in the grandparent parsha, no older YET. And yes, I realize that people just have to move, in order to dance. I dance myself. But the way that some of these young ladies (and they are even chassidic) do it, it really is surprising that they would have learned to shake themselves in such a disco kind of way. I have seen, not Bais Yaakov productions, but from the girls' yeshivas in my own neighborhood, and frankly (and I am NO prude by any means, as those who know me will attest), I think it is unbecoming for the girls to dance that way even in front of other females. They are shaking parts of them that should not be shaken, and this is simply not in the spirit of Yiddishkeit, from what I see. Certainly it is not Yeshivedig for schools that purport to impart a certain hashkafa. Just My Opinion, folks. Now this old fuddy duddy is going back to her rocking chair and taking a nap...

oomis, on a bit of a tangent, have you ever watched the BY type school plays? Well, if you've noticed, many of the dances have steps straight off 'Lord of the Dance'. These girls have more exposure than we think they do.

I think a lot of it happens through friends, very common to say I read/watched <whatever>, it was great and you should also.

B"H I managed to hobble over by myself. I learned to type when I rode to school on my pet Brontosaurus. In those days we typed in pictures, there were no letters as yet...

Yep, thems was the good ol' days.

    Mayan,
I hope you're not serious and that nobody here takes your idea seriously. While it is wrong for a girl to go on this machine, it is waaaay more wrong to embarrass someone for something they did especially that they probably didn't even realize it was wrong. Also, what is the heter for a guy to watch them and take pics? That's even more prust than the girl who is on there in the first place.

    charlie brown you are correct, it would be wrong for a guy to do that. Maybe another girl can do it. Flatbush27, I don't think telling them it's wrong will do it. I guess the right strategy would be for a woman/girl go over say "hey that's not tznius" if that gets no response, then whip out the camera and say "Here's to Facebook!";

Mayan, I hope you are kidding!!  There are other ways to do this.  There are security cameras nowadays, and you could tell them, they danced so well, that a crowd  was watching them dance even on the security cameras.

    mayan,
unfortunately it seems you were serious. You addressed my second point by having girls do the picture taking but what about my first point - that embarrasing someone is assur? Also, when will people learn that you can't get kids to become more frum by threatening and bullying them to act a certain way? Your idea will only chase them further away from yidishkeit.

charlie- you sound so serious. Are you or aren't you? What you're saying doesn't sound wrong or strange... so why the good grief comment? And if you're kidding, we need a hint! like a wink or "jk" at the end

anyway, I agree with the bullying part, but I can't say I'm not enjoying Mayan's humor- hilarious! Picture it (pun intended)- this old geezer whippin out his 60 yr old clunker of a cam and hollerin "Here's To Facebook"!
    Ha!

you'd never see another girl on there till your dieing day. The guys on the other hand... they'd figure something out- and that old man would regret his actions for the rest, er, of his life ;)

    areivim,
I put a smiley after the good grief comment. sorry for confusing you, but I'm confused myself as to whether I'm serious or not, lol.

OK here's what happened - at first I assumed mayan was serious so I disagreed with him and was not at all joking. Then you told me to chill so I assumed that you're probably right that he was kidding and I need to chill, hence the non-serious line about my being too serious because I passed my humor quota. Then Mayan posted again and it seems that I was correct originally - that he's serious and not being facetious. So now I'm vehemently disagreeing with him again and completely serious.

    Got it all now?

I got it- did you? Although he repeated it, he's not really serious about actually goin out there and DOING it. T'was just an idea, y'know?
Mayan- am I correct? I know- it's tempting and you like the idea, but would you REALLY suggest someone does that?

This is such an intellectual and deep discussion Charlie ;) "Is Mayan Serious or Not" thread
so what does the Rosh Yeshiva have to say on this shvera sugya?

no I don't get it - my head is spinning. Pass the bourbon, will ya? ;)

But actually I think mayan is serious that taking pictures will scare these girls away from these machines. I think it will scare them away from yidishkeit instead.

Mayan, if I was wrong and you were kidding, I apologize.

Charlie, we only serve coffee in here.

The editor doesn't like us drinking alcohol while modding. (He said trust me - I know it's a good idea. Not sure what he meant by that. Wtvr)

When we get a little crazy and need some alcohol I sneak some in, but it's strictly Single Malt Scotch. Nothing else. So we can't pass the bourbon. (Oh and don't tell the editor about sneaking in the scotch part. Thanks)

99, sorry chief, I don't mean to contradict you and certainly not publically, however, the handbook clearly says in section chof-hai: refreshments while moderating - subsection beis: beverages: although coffee is the beverage of choice while moderating other beverages are acceptable if the following criteria are met: 1) a coffee cup is used as the beverage container (ceramic, glass or disposable is fine) 2) tea is the second beverage of choice, 3) fruit juices and soda is permitted, 4) all other beverages need prior approval.

btw it is item 3 above that I rely upon to sip (fermented) Plum Juice while noderatereringing

The girls who are dancing it, either don't see that it's wrong, or didn't think so for which all these idea's would work. The other type of girls would know that it's wrong but don't care, so these things probably won't work.

    72,

Come on - you think I don't know that? I WROTE THE RULE BOOK with the editor. (Ok he wrote it and I looked it over and made revisions. But I definitely know the book well.) Oh yea, I also enforce the rules.

Charlie said pass the bourbon. I replied we only serve coffee here. Which is true. You can drink other beverages if you follow the guidelines, however, we don't serve them. (That's why we have to go downstairs to the news floor to get to the water cooler.)

And alcohol is certainly not permitted.

And about your prune juice, uhh, I don't know how to say this nicely, but could you put a lid on that cup? It kinda make the room smell. Sorry and thanks!
