Where does the tradition to kiss a tzadik's hand come from and when is it done? I've seen it by Chasidim, Sefardim, and sometimes by Litvaks.

I guess it's showing your love for the kedusha from all the mitzvos and maa'sim tovim that those hands did. like some pple kiss the the ground when they land in E"Y.

I guess that's just another sign that I'm totally wicked. Having never kissed the hand of a tzaddik (and having no desire to), I guess that means that I have no love for kedusha and mitzvos.

    Cold? No.
    Self-critical? Yes.
Someone who recognizes the truth about themselves? Absolutely.
    Is that a shame? Perhaps.

Wolf: do you have a persecution complex or something? :)

No. I don't believe I've ever stated or implied that anyone was persecuting me.

Forget kissing the hand of a tzadik. There's this new fab that some bochurim do that after they shake your hand they kiss their own hand as if you have some holy powers or something and it'll transform itself to him. Man that is annoying!

I don't recall where I saw it, but I recall seeing in a sefer somewhere that kissing connects the person('s neshamah?) to the thing he is kissing. Kissing the hand in particular probably is more kovodig than kissing a cheek.
The Yavetz also brings down to kiss one's mothers hand upon arriving home from shul friday night.

do you kiss your tzitzis by shema

    Sometimes.

I'm guessing this guy doesn't kiss anything that he doesn't have a taiva for...

How many people do you know who kiss things they don't enjoy?

prehaps he is correct in his self analysis.

    Yes, I am.

It's very nice that you think you know yourself however if you honestly feel that there's room for growth get down to business and take care of it. This isn't a confession booth and we don't do that in our religion. If you want to change get a Shaarei Teshuvah of the Rabbeinu Yona and learn through it and try to apply it. Coming here and putting yourself down is self deception.

Just a habit. I've been active on online message boards for over a dozen years now and I *always* sign my name.

    There's no other message.

    "Yes, I am."
can you prove that to us?

You mean aside from the fact that I (according to various shittos) am a mechallel Shabbos, an apikores, a moser, worship Avoda Zara, eat tarfus and am not eligible for a minyan?

In Catholicism, they do that for absolution. I am not seeking absolution as I know that there is no absolution possible for one such as me.

I am NOT a Christian. It's bad enough that I am what I am. Don't make it worse by accusing me of things that are NOT true.

Even if you are allowed to say lashon harah about one such as me, I highly doubt that you're allowed to actively spread lies about me.

I don't know what you have or haven't done in your life. However I'm sure many of the Baalei Teshuvah and Geirim that we have today have done a lot worse. Many of done 2 of the 3 chamuros. Hashem accepts sincere Teshuvah from anyone. Hashem loves you even if you have sinned greatly. The yetzer tries knocking us down and telling us that we are lost and we have no hope. He is a big liar it's what he does best. Don't believe it for a second. If it were true that one can't do Teshuvah he wouldn't try so hard to put us down and make us think we are hopeless. He doesn't like losing customers.

Sorry for staying on topic, but there's a choshuv Sefardi rov that won't let anyone kiss his hand. My friends have quoted him saying that the reason one kisses a tzaddiks hand is because of the kedusha in them from writing seforim. This particular rov never wrote a sefer, hence he never lets anyone kiss his hand.

Rav. Ovadia Yosef Shlita brings down that the hand of a Rav has Kedusha from writing his droshas and therefore it is customary to kiss his hand on the way out of Shul. It's in the Halachot of Shabbat I don't remember where exactly. It also mentions kissing your mother/father's hand after the blessing of the children. The mother is especially important because Friday night is all about the Shabbos Queen etc.

A person for example that bites his nails, picks his nose, etc ect, is called a "nail biter" and a "nose picker", they are called that based on their habits. and when you have toooooooo many usernames I'd call that habits too. the username indicaates what you are, so it's all connected..lol

    @ lemonysnicket:
don't know who you've seen doing that but its not a new thing. Persians do this as a sign of respect, generally after shaking an elder's hand, or after shaking a Kohen's hand, etc. it's not meant to be cool - its a respectful gesture from a culture where men kiss on the cheek in greeting, and an elderly person (not just a gadol, but anyone who is elderly and respected) is kissed on the forehead and hand.

Most sephardim do not do this. While I have seen persians and some morrocans doing this, I would definitely NOT say that this is the general custom of Sephardim.

Iraqis do it, but they may have only started with the ben Ish Chai. I'm not an expert but I know that some minhagim started under him. I don't think ashkenazim did it before very recent times because in Christian countries there would be no hava amina to do it since it was chukas hagoy.

Kissing someone's hand is a sign of respect. I remember seeing my father always kiss his father's hand when we would leave his house. My father never had us do it, but it made an impression on me seeing my father's respect for his father. He and my mother also used to talk to him in 3rd person i.e. Does the Tatte want a drink of water?
