    Is “nothing” the absence of something, or a thing in and of itself?

    That depends on the context. For example:

    “Yankel, what are you doing?”

    “Nothing, Ma.”

    In that example, “nothing” refers to a thing in and of itself.

    Nothing is no thing. So if there are only the two possibilities, it is the absence of something (or everything).
