Is “nothing” the absence of something, or a thing in and of itself?
That depends on the context. For example:
“Yankel, what are you doing?”
“Nothing, Ma.”
In that example, “nothing” refers to a thing in and of itself.
Nothing is no thing. So if there are only the two possibilities, it is the absence of something (or everything).

Hashem created yeish m’ayin (something from nothing) and Hashem was m’tzamtzeim himself to create the world it has to be the absence of something
