Any paralegals out there? I am looking into becoming one and I was wondering what the pros and cons are.

    Thank you.

Incorrigible; semi-retarded; eccentric; perhaps a woman; not Mod 80. Sometimes a bit over the top.

You get to spend 5 years being jealous of the attorneys who are making 5-10 times as much, and you think you are doing just as much just as well.

Then, you go to law school yourself, and wind up without any job at all, and a quarter million in debt.

I know a few paralegals. You may be paid less than a lawyer, but you can actually have a life. (Unlike many lawyers.)

I don't want to be a lawyer. I want to have something more than a BA so I can maybe work part time and still make enough money to support. Is this possible?

Tell it to me, and I will tell you if its Loshon Hara :)

I know a paralegal you can speak to. If you know who I am feel free to call and I'll give you her number. I would try to give you hints to who she is but I can't think of a way to do that and protect her privacy.

I wouldn't know how old your daughter is. I've been post sem for a nice couple of years now. Do you know who I am? I mean can you figure it out from my old threads? It might be possible that I don't know you, no?

I will tell her. If you are friends with someone getting married in Feb, ask her, she'll know. Hatzlacha!

I took a paralegal gig for a bit at a government prosecuting agency. Not very vague, I know. Anyways, it's not very glamorous. Office work. 9am-5pm. Some law firms start paralegals out at 90k. But that's rare.

    What about court reporting?

Syag - Alright, but rarely does my house phone get answered. I'm more of a cell phone person.

So it's just like filing and researching?

I thought about court reporting but I think I would lose my mind just sitting and typing like that all day.

You don't need a college degree to get a paralegal certificate. If you enjoy legal work but dont want the difficulty, expense, and commitment of law school followed by crazy lawyer hours you would like it. I believe Brooklyn College or Brooklyn Law offers a course. Call to find out expense and length of training (I think its 15 months but I could be wrong). If you aren't even sure if its for you, you can get a secretary job in a law office to get the feel of what kind of work it would be.
