Can anyone guide me to an English translation of Seder Hadoros ? Laskern referenced it in a now closed thread specifically:

“See the Seder Hadoros 3300, Plato was educated by Yermiah Hanovi.”

“See the Seder Hadoros 3442 that Aristotle at the end of his life regretted to Alexander the Great that he didn’t burn all his books.”

I am very anxious to learn about these and related matters–any guidance would be welcomed!

Seder Hadoros, The Order of Generations, written by Rabbi Yechiel Halperin of Minsk, the capital of Belarus, in the seventeenth century, who is a descendant of Rashi. It is a historical account from Adam Harishon to his time. He says about Plato that originally he dismissed Jerimiah Hanovi but then he realized that his words were דברי אלקים חיים, G-dly.

I doubt there is an English translation. However, Google :

“Seder Hadorot Plato mind over matter”. There footnote 279. You will find many sources on that topic and others as well.

Also, see what the Nishmas Chaim says regarding that (posted earlier) , and Aristotle. He writes that many of Plato’s philosophy is similar to our true Torah beliefs, the reason is as the above.

An interesting story told for year 4613- 853 There was a woman Pope whose name was Joan. She was educated in medicine and she dressed up as a man and became the doctor of the Pope. When the pope died she was appointed Pope. She became pregnant and marching in a parade she miss- carried. To this very day, there is a chair in the Vatican to test their gender.

The problem studying greek philosophy is that it is very similar to the Jewish beliefs, so it is not easy to recognize the differences.

“” it is very similar to the Jewish beliefs”

The only similarity would be the logic style relative to nowadays. (don’t forget the Talmud was written in the same era as some of the Greeks). but in essence there are major differences.

The Rambam’s Sefer haMorah is actually based on many Greek works in particular Aristotle – disputing many of their beliefs.

If the greek philosophy is not similar what is the danger in learning it?

When Diane Sawyer from ABC News went to visit the Vatican, she saw a hollow chair and was told that it was used to test the gender.

Gaon, Why are you arguing with me? I quoted the Seder Hadoros 4653
ד אלפים תריג about Pope Joan.

Whoa. Chachmei Yisroel! He’s only as good as his sources. He did a great service with this compilation but he is not a witness. The Chida complained about why he gave this much credence to Shalsheles Hakabalah, which is a collection of stories from any source.

    Joseph,

It is one thing if he claimed his works were written via Ruach haKodesh, but facts like these that don’t pertain to any Jews he simply obtained thru whatever info was at that time as Halevi has pointed out.

Similar to what the Rambam writes regarding scientific facts that Chazal write..
In any case, in not arguing I’m just pointing it out the facts.
