Greenfield Announces Plan to Ensure that Children Are Safe In Schools

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Brooklyn – New York City Council candidate and education advocate David G. Greenfield announced a plan that would require every non-public school submit their entire staff to fingerprint criminal background checks by the NYPD just like public school employees. The plan, which would apply to every yeshiva in Brooklyn, was crafted with consultation with Das Torah. Currently, yeshivas have no criminal background check requirement for their employees that would prevent criminals from being employed. This plan will give parents the confidence that their children are in a school with no criminals.

“When parents send their children to yeshiva, they trust that they are sending their children to a safe place for them to learn. There is nothing more important than keeping our children safe,” said Greenfield. “Keeping child predators and criminals out of our yeshivas is common sense legislation. When elected I will introduce legislation mandating criminal background checks for all yeshiva employees.”

Unlike other elected officials, Greenfield consulted with Das Torah before releasing this plan.

“The issue of abuse is serious and must be addressed accordingly.” Greenfield added. “When I am elected to the City Council, I will work collaboratively with our rabbonim and mosdos to combat this horrendous crime and ensure that our children are safe and secure.”

GOP Website Aims To Fire Pelosi

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

In response to their failure to stop health care reform from passing last night, the Republicans have set their sights on a new goal: Nancy Pelosi’s job as Speaker of the House.

The GOP’s official Web site has been replaced by firenancypelosi.com, boasting a goal to knock the Democratic leader from her post by winning 40 seats in the House of Representatives in November’s elections.

“It is time to fire Nancy Pelosi and send a message to President Obama that it’s time to stop their partisan liberal agenda of government takeovers and start working for Americans to create jobs and grow our economy,” RNC Chairman Michael Steele said in a statement late last night.

The site initially aimed to raise $402,010 in 40 hours, but that amount increased as it passed that goal less than halfway through its fundraising efforts. As of this posting, the total had reached $613,416.

Donators are invited to give as little as $40, but as much as $400.

This is not the first time Pelosi has been targeted by the GOP. Last year, the National Republican Congressional Committee spearheaded a Fire Nancy Pelosi petition using mobile phones. The goal was to obtain signatures, but also raise money.

Chevron Residents Act in Response to Provocation by Foreign Observers

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Chevron residents on Monday morning took to the streets to block foreign observers engaged in provocation, entering areas of the Jewish community off-limits to them, yet willingly and knowingly seeking to overstep their bounds.

The Jewish residents succeeded in preventing their entry, and IDF soldiers were summoned to intervene, to seek to talk down the sides in the conflict.

UPDATE: IDF Soldier Shot Dead In Mistaken Fire Incident

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

[ORIGINAL UPDATES BELOW] 9:00PM IL: It is now cleared to release that an IDF soldier was killed by mistaken gunfire in the Kissufim area.

Golani Brigade forces operating in the Kissufim area were unaware that tank corps soldiers were operating in the area. The tank corps soldiers entered on foot in response to a report that three Gazans crossed the fence. They are not permitted to fire in that area for fear of striking civilians.

The infantry force responded in a jeep, detecting the movement of three tank corps soldiers, opening fire in the belief they were firing at terrorists. Tragically, one of the tank corps soldiers was killed.

The three Gazans were taken into custody and it was determined they are not terrorists, but crossed into Israel in the hope of securing work.

IDF Southern District Commander Major-General Yoav Gallant has ordered an investigation headed by a senior officer.

7:55PM IL: A number of hours ago soldiers were engaged in a heavy exchanges of gunfire in the Kissufim area, a location where sporadic gunfire has been taking place for much of the day.

Hamas sources report IDF soldiers are firing artillery shells and illumination flares in the Kissufim area.

7:06PM IL: At present, details of the event are not cleared by the military censor for publication, but a serious security incident has just occurred near Kissufim along the Gaza border.

YWN-Israel will provide additional details as soon as they may be released.

Attorneys General In 12 States Poised To Challenge ObamCare

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Attorneys general from at least 12 states say they will challenge the constitutionality of the healthcare reform bill passed by the House of Representatives Sunday night.

The threatened action suggests the controversial measure is about to move from the legislative realm into what could become a protracted and messy fight in the courts. The attorneys general say they will sue once President Obama signs the bill into law. They are pledging to take their battle all the way to the US Supreme Court.

“The health care legislation Congress passed tonight is an assault against the Constitution,” said South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster. “A legal challenge by the states appears to be the only hope of protecting the American people from this unprecedented attack on our system of government,” he said in a statement.

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum issued a similar statement late Sunday. “If the president signs this bill into law, we will file a lawsuit to protect the rights and interests of American citizens,” he said.

The comments came after a Sunday night conference call in which attorneys general from 11 states expressed support for legal action to block the law. In addition to Florida and South Carolina, the participating attorneys general were from Alabama, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Washington, Utah, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

In addition, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli announced that he will file a lawsuit on behalf of his state challenging what he called the “unconstitutional overreach” of the healthcare law.

NY DAILY NEWS: Comptroller Criticizes Lazar for Misleading Voters About Felder’s Support

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

[Elizabeth Benjamin of the Daily News reports] A spokeswoman for Comptroller John Liu today chastised City Council hopeful Joe Lazar for distributing literature that seems to imply he has been endorsed man he’s trying to replace, Simcha Felder, in tomorrow’s 44th CD special election.

The mailer quotes Felder saying: “I want to thank Joe Lazar for all the help he has given our community.” There’s no indication as to when or where the former councilman made that statement.

Felder referred a call seeking comment to Liu spokeswoman Sharon Lee, who said:

“(Felder) has not and will not be involved in the race. Any photos or literature insinuating the deputy comptroller’s support were unauthorized.”

Felder departed his seat on the Council to join Liu’s staff as deputy comptroller for budget and accounting, leaving shortly after he was sworn for a third term.

Lazar’s chief competition in the 44th CD is David Greenfield, who, like Felder, used to work for Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

Hikind is supporting Lazar. So is Liu, although you wouldn’t know is from the other side of the mailer, which apparently is being sent out in Boro Park (hence the re-print of The Jewish Press endorsement, plus the photos of Hikind, Assemblyman Steve Cymbrowitz and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio).

On his list of endorsements from elected officials, Greenfield has former Brooklyn Democratic Chairman/Assemblyman Vito Lopez, Mayor Ed Koch and Mayor Bloomberg, who campaigned with the candidate last week.

Shalits Address Geneva Human Rights Forum

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Noam and Aviva Shalit addressed a Geneva human rights forum, the same forum that appointed the Goldstone Commission.

The parents of captive IDF soldier Gilad explained that he remains in isolation in violation of international law and the Geneva Convention, adding in his report on Operation Cast Lead, Justice Richard Goldstone called on Hamas to release Gilad. They also point out that in his report, Goldstone called to permit humanitarian visits to the soldier, which to date have not occurred, and mothering is done.

The Shalits stressed that are not politicians and they are simply working to obtain their son’s release.

HEALTH: Getting through Pesach

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

It’s that time of the year again… the holiday season. Perhaps nothing is more challenging than getting through Pesach with your health and weight intact. As daunting and challenging as this may seem, a few little tricks and just a little self-discipline can get you through virtually unscathed.

There are essentially three areas where we all tend to get into trouble: one – the amounts of food we consume sitting at our tables for our festive meals; two – the types of foods we eat; and three – the general lack of activity and exercise during Pesach.

Let’s first look at the portion control issue. There is a mitzvah to eat certain foods during the Chagim, such as matzah. There is no mitzvah, however, to consume mass quantities of anything. In order to keep a handle on the over-eating problem, try this. Take a reasonable portion on your plate, and if you are truly still hungry after you eat what’s on your plate, take seconds of a cooked or raw vegetable or fruit. (If you are permitted to eat legumes, take a brown rice dish). Remember that drinking water may also make you feel full. So, drink up before you start your meal. And for all you matzah lovers out there… Remember that although we are commanded to eat matzah on Pesach, we are not commanded to eat mass quantities of it for the entire length of the chag!

As for the kinds of food we eat… Everyone can make some subtle but significant adjustments in this area as well. Even though meat and chicken dishes are more popular at this time of year, you can trim the fat from your meat and order lean cuts to begin with. Remove the skin from chicken and turkey, preferably before cooking, and keep in mind that the white meat is much leaner than the dark meat. Also, keep the emphasis on vegetables and try to use whole grain matzah. For dessert, go for fresh fruit salads, melons and sorbets instead of cake and cookies, which are loaded with sugar and fat. Also, keep in mind that most pareve ice creams contain chemicals and high-fat based whips.

Item number three… lack of activity… No! Don’t go out and do an exercise session during the Seder!  But, don’t sit around either.  Nice long, brisk walks, particularly after your meals, are a great idea.  There is nothing worse than throwing yourself into metabolic rigor mortis by falling asleep immediately after a meal.  When you are finished with the walk, stretch a little and then you can take your nap.

Acharei HaChagim…  How many times do we hear that phrase during the year?  If you want to plan something for after the Chagim now, set up an appointment for a lifestyle, health and fitness assessment.  Make an appointment now for after Pesach with a trainer at your local gym.  No more excuses!  Plan now so that after Pesach, you are committed and ready to take on a program that can change your health and change your life!

This is a time of year in which to be joyful and happy, and to celebrate together with our families.  We need not create more stress in our lives than we already have.  So, instead of saying “after Pesach”, resolve to get started with good and healthful habits right now.  Watching serving sizes, eating healthful choices, and staying as active as possible over the Pesach holiday are all ways to “add hours to your day, days to your year and years to your life.”

Kashrus of Insect-Free Greens Revoked Over Health Concerns

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

In a rare but welcome move, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel turned to Rabbi Pinchas Cohen, the Chief Rabbi of Netivot, instructing him to remove his kashrus supervision from the “Yevul HaNegev” insect-free greens due to tests revealing an unacceptably high presence of insecticides.

Acting in his role of the head of the Chief Rabbinate’s unit to inspect the bug-free greens, Tzfat Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu conducted tests ahead of Pesach to determine the actual status of different companies vis-à-vis claims that the products are insect free, as was reported by Jerusalem Kosher News last week http://www.jerusalemkoshernews.com/ .

In addition to inspecting for the presence of insects, tests were conducted to determine insecticide levels and the company in question exceeds the permitted amount, to the point where the product poses a danger to consumers.

Rabbi Eliyahu sent a strong letter to Rabbi Rafi Yochai, who heads the Chief Rabbinate’s Kashrus Enforcement Division, instructing him to halt the distribution of the said company’s insect-free greens.

Tests conducted on the products of 20 companies’ revealed an alarming high presence of insecticides in Yivul HaNegev products.

According to Dr. Tzachi Saklaski, who conducted the testing, Yivul HaNegev used agents that are prohibited, more than one prohibited agent, and the traces of those agents pose a health hazard – demanding the item is recalled from store shelves.

Despite the findings, the company continues to market its product, officials report.

Help, Hope, Support, and Fun Are All Present at Chai Lifeilne’s Annual Family Retreat

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Fifty-four families living with a child’s serious illness found comfort, support, information and inspiration at Chai Lifeline’s annual LH Financial Services Winter Retreat last weekend.

The annual Chai Lifeline event fosters both communication and connection among family members and between families who are related only by the dreaded circumstances of a child’s illness. They have nothing and everything in common, and the Retreat enables them to find common ground.

“I didn’t know anyone before I came. Now I feel like I have all these real friends,” remarked a first-time participant. Next to her a counselor, one of dozens who brought their special spirit to the weekend, lifted her young son in the air, eliciting giggles she said she hadn’t heard since he was diagnosed months before. The two headed off to the playroom, where they joined a passel of other children who “used to be sick” before their parents discovered Chai Lifeline’s infectious brand of counselor-generated fun.

“It’s not a good thing that so many families have children with cancer, but some very wonderful things happened as a result of us all being together in the same place,” wrote parent David Brand in his blog. “We had never been to a gathering where differences were irrelevant. That alone was wonderful.”

“The Retreat is all about communication and connection,” noted Rabbi Simcha Scholar, Chai Lifeline’s executive vice president. “Our goal is to provide a time and place for both.”

Psychologist David Pelcovitz focused on the importance of the two “C”s during his first address to the group following a sumptuous Shabbos meal. He described a study that asked people to estimate the steepness of a hill, then climb it. Those who stood at the hill with a friend not only saw the hill as more easily surmountable, but were less tired by the climb.

“Having someone with you makes all the difference,” he said. “That’s what this weekend is all about: creating a community that will stand with you.”

Sometimes communication is what’s needed to create a community, and the Chai Lifeline weekend gave families ample opportunity to building lasting friendships. Following Dr. Pelcovitz’s addresses on Friday night and Shabbos morning, parents split into groups of fathers and mothers. Chai Lifeline’s professional staff facilitated discussions that touched on the many challenges of parenting a very sick child. This year, groups included parents at each stage of their children’s illness, from those whose children have just been diagnosed to those whose children are years post-treatment.

“I think it’s helpful for people whose children are right in the thick of things to see that there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” said a mother. “You feel hopeful that your child will be well again.”

“Learning that all the other families faced very similar challenges helped us understand that we’re not entirely insane. It was very comforting,” said Brand.

Retreat mixed spiritual highs with help for the mundane

The event included both inspiring divrei Torah and practical advice for living with illness. The Retreat’s Parent Panel, always a highlight of the event, featured for the first time grandparents and a sibling in addition to a parent. Seeking guidance for their own lives, parents were eager to query the panelists.

“Did you feel that you had to shoulder too much of the household burden when your sister was sick?” one mother asked the sister of a six-year-old.

“I never felt like I was doing too much,” she replied. As the young woman described her support system, which included a large family and active grandparents, the relief in the woman’s eyes was palpable. Clearly teen’s answer was a balm that comforted a mother also worried about the residual effects of one child’s illness on her others.

As Shabbos ended, the group gathered around Rabbi Scholar, who summed up the impact of the weekend with a poem by Jonathan Butts.

“When you are sad, I will dry your tears. When you are scared, I will comfort your fears. When you are worried, I will give you hope. When you are confused, I will help you cope,” he read.

A woman turned to her friend, her face serene after a weekend of comfort and support. “That’s Chai Lifeline,” she said. “That’s why we’re here.”

Get’cha Head in the Game

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Passover is a holiday that looms above us.  The mere thought of cleaning our homes, and the madness it entails can be a huge task.  As a mother of five, I have found that food travels into spaces that one never imagined…bookshelves, closets, behind the couch.  “Seek and ye shall find” is a verse that is spoken with trepidation during these times of cleaning house.

As Purim ended, the thoughts of Passover began.  Even our local supermarket joined the band-wagon with a two for one bleach sale, cleaning sponges, and the infamous paper towels all below the usual marked-up prices.  Cleaning products were moved to outside the store, and at the end of every isle.  The spray bottles, now in hot-pink and bright neon orange, jumped out at me, at every turn of my cart as I shopped for my daily necessities.

Last year, being the good American-raised daughter that I am, had a stocked closet of matzoh, farfel, matzoh meal, tomato ketchup, tomato sauce, jam, jelly, canned goods…need I go on? It was my pride and joy.  Yet, I had to schlep to markets beyond my local neighborhood to procure the goods.  And, I realized that as Passover approached all of the above-said goods were available in my local markets, at lower prices!

So, this year, I decided to do the unthinkable…wait.  Yes, it is hard to prevent the genetic instincts to hoard Passover items a month prior to the blessed event. But, I found that I actually enjoyed the time.  I cleaned my kids’ closets with ease, not angst.  I had them help me organize, and sift through unnecessary items that could be donated to those in greater need.  I found this to be the easiest Passover preparation period…ever! Why? I had taken the anxiety out of the madness. It was a wonderful revelation…Passover with no guilt, no trepidation, and no fear of the leaven madness!

In prior years, I would attend a lecture given by our local Rabbi about Passover preparation.  He would give a basic speech about necessary things that one must do to prepare their home for Passover.  The Rabbi talked of koshering the kitchen, and of the process of burning one’s leavened bread.  The Rabbi always started his speech by saying “Passover is not Spring Cleaning! So many people confuse the two! It is a time for reflection, and a time for family!”  Often I would walk away from the lecture wishing I could put the words of the Rabbi into practice…to take the anxiety of cleaning out of the preparation…to view the holiday as one of our freedom to celebrate as Jewish people together with our loved ones.  I never thought I would be able to put the Rabbi’s words into action.  The task was an impossible goal.

At this time, I find that I am at peace with the concept of Passover. I am truly thankful for the fact that it is a holiday that brings my family from near and far, together in one room to recount the miracles of freeing the Jewish people from Egypt.  The holiday is one for children to shine, and adults to listen.  It is a time to eat the matzoh, and remember the miracles of the Jewish people seeking refuge from hundreds of years of bondage and slavery.  And, as my family eats the matzoh, I will gladly watch the crumbs flutter to the clean floor.  Each savory bite is a symbol of our origins, and our means to survive.

How Important is Image for PM Netanyahu?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

According to veteran Gush Etzion resident Rabbi Chanan Porat, image is high on the agenda for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, explaining that back on Tu B’Shvat, when learning the prime minister was planning to plant seedlings in Kibbutz Kfar Etzion, he contacted Mr. Netanyahu to tell him that he is unwelcome, for one who freezes Jewish construction throughout Yehuda and Shomron is not an ally of the community.

As was reported by YWN-Israel (http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/article.php?p=45817), the prime minister did visit the community and hold a planting ceremony, buying himself badly-needed PR among residents of Yosh, but it has now been learned that he succeeded in arranging his Zionist charade by defrosting the building freeze for the kibbutz, permitting construction of 50 housing units in exchange for the public relations event.

Porat is viewed as one of the founding fathers of the renewed settlement in Yehuda, Shomron and Gaza. His family lived in the kibbutz and was evacuated in the War of Independence. He was among the paratroopers who merited liberating Har Habayis, and he has returned to his home community and has been working towards building Greater Eretz Yisrael since.

Porat, a former MK, has confirmed reports that he is not in good health, explaining since the expulsion from Gaza, he has not succeeded in recovering from the blow, the awareness that Jews knowingly expelled others from their homes in Eretz Yisrael.

Virginia To Sue U.S. Over Healthcare Reform

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Virginia’s attorney general said he plans to sue the federal government over the healthcare reform legislation, saying Congress lacks authority to force people to buy health insurance.

The following is the statement from Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli:

“The Office of the Attorney General of Virginia will move forward with our lawsuit against the federal government and its unconstitutional overreach of its authority with the passage of the federal health care bill.  We will file our complaint with the court as soon as the president signs it into law.

“With this law, the federal government will force citizens to buy health insurance, claiming it has the authority to do so because of its power to regulate interstate commerce.  We contend that if a person decides not to buy health insurance, that person – by definition – is not engaging in commerce, and therefore, is not subject to a federal mandate.

“Virginia is in a unique situation that allows it the standing to file such a suit since Virginia is the only state so far to pass a law protecting its citizens from a government-imposed mandate to buy health insurance.  The health care reform bill, with its insurance mandate, creates a conflict of laws between the federal government and Virginia.  Normally, such conflicts are decided in favor of the federal government, but because we believe the federal law is unconstitutional, Virginia’s law should prevail.

“Just being alive is not interstate commerce.  If it were, there would be no limit to the U.S. Constitution’s commerce clause and to Congress’s authority to regulate everything we do.  There has never been a point in our history where the federal government has been given the authority to require citizens to buy goods or services.

“While we believe the health care reform bill the House just voted on suffers from constitutional problems, we do want to thank Speaker Pelosi for not trying to enact the bill through the questionable “deem and pass” procedure.  By requiring an up-or-down vote on the Senate bill, she is living up to the letter of Article I, Section 7 of the Constitution.  As someone who is sworn to protect the Constitution, she did the right thing in that regard.”

The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled in other cases that Congress cannot regulate non-commercial activities.  In United States v. Lopez (1995) and United States v. Morrison (2000), the Supreme Court struck down attempts to regulate non-commercial activities based upon their predicted effects on interstate commerce because those attempts went beyond the outer limits of the Commerce Clause.

The suit will be filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division.

This Will Not Stand: Newt Gingrich On The Passage Of Obamacare

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

This will not stand.

No one should be confused about the outcome of Sunday’s vote

This is not the end of the fight it is the beginning of the fight.

The American people spoke decisively against a big government, high tax, Washington knows best, pro trial lawyer centralized bureaucratic health system

In every recent poll the vast majority of Americans opposed this monstrosity

Speaker Pelosi knew the country was against the bill. That is why she kept her members trapped in Washington and forced a vote on Sunday.

She knew if she let the members go home their constituents would convince them to vote no.

The Obama-Pelosi-Reid machine combined the radicalism of Alinsky, the corruption of Springfield and the machine power politics of Chicago.

Sunday was a pressured, bought, intimidated vote worthy of Hugo Chavez but unworthy of the United States of America.

It is hard to imagine how much pressure they brought to bear on congressman Stupak to get him to accept a cynical, phony clearly illegal and unconstitutional executive order on abortion. The ruthlessness and inhumanity of the Obama-Pelosi-Reid machine was most clearly on display in their public humiliation of Stupak.

The real principles of the machine were articulated by Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings who was impeached and removed from the bench as a federal judge, before being elected to the House when he said “”There ain’t no rules here, we’re trying to accomplish something. . . .All this talk about rules. . . .When the deal goes down . . . we make ‘em up as we go along.”

It is hard for the American people to believe their leaders on the left are this bad.
They are.

The American people will not allow a corrupt machine to dictate their future.

Together we will pledge to repeal this bill and start over

Together we will prove that this will not stand

2010 and 2012 will be among the most important elections in American history
