Rabbi Yehuda Levin: Elena Kagan Isn’t ‘Kosher’ to Serve on Supreme Court

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan is “not kosher” — meaning she is not fit to serve on the court — according to more than 850 Orthodox members of the Rabbinical Alliance of America. That’s the term the rabbis used about Kagan in a press release issued Thursday, saying “Elena Kagan is not kosher. She is not fit to sit on this Court — or any court.”

Rabbi Yehuda Levin, spokesman for the alliance, told CNSNews.com on Thursday that “a great deal has been made about the fact that she would be the second Jewish woman on the court, and we want to signal to people across the country that we take no pride in this.”

Levin said most people are happy when “one of their own” is nominated to such a high position. But, he added, “We feel that Elena Kagan turns traditional Judaism on its head – from a concept of a nation of priests and holy people, she is turning it into, ‘Let’s Toeiva’ize every segment of society. And by the way, partial-birth babies have no right to be delivered.’”

In a statement issued Thursday, the rabbinical alliance called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to refuse to confirm Kagan to succeed the outgoing Justice John Paul Stevens.

“It is clear from Ms. Kagan’s record on issues such as abortion-on-demand, partial-birth-abortion, the radical Toeiva agenda, the “supremacy” of the anti-family panoply over religious liberties of biblical adherents, et. al., that she will function as a flame-throwing radical, hastening society’s already steep decline into Sodom and Gomorrah,” the rabbis said in the statement.

Levin told CNSNews.com that his fellow rabbis – and hundreds of thousands of Orthodox and traditional Jews – are puzzled at the president’s choice of Kagan.

“What exactly was Obama thinking, President Obama thinking, when he nominated Kagan? Because eventually, down the road, someone — or some group — is going to ‘take the hit’ for the crazy decisions that Kagan is bound to make. So we would have much preferred if President Obama had given this ‘distinction’ to another minority group, instead of singling out the Jews.”

Barring a rebuff from the Senate Judiciary Committee, Levin told CNSNews.com that the rabbis want someone in the Senate to launch a filibuster to stop Kagan’s nomination from coming to a vote.

‘We’re waiting for the more courageous, decent senators – whether it’s a (Sen.) Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) or a (Sen.) Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) or a (Sen.) Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) – we’re looking for them to stand up and filibuster this embarrassing endangerment of a nomination,” Levin said.

Confirmation hearings for Kagan begin Monday at the Senate Judiciary Committee. Neither Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) nor  Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) — both members of the committee, known Kagan supporters and top Jewish members of the Senate — responded to calls for comment on this story.

NYC Says Farewell To W & V Trains

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Straphangers will bid farewell to two of the city’s subway lines today.

The W and V trains are set to make their final runs, before being discontinued as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s cost-cutting plan.

The changes officially take effect Sunday, but neither the W nor V runs on the weekends.

Come Monday morning, the M line will be rerouted to cover some of the stations in Lower Manhattan that had been served by the V. And, the Q will be extended to Astoria to make up for the loss of the W train.

Thirty-seven bus lines are also being eliminated with many more being rerouted, or facing reductions in night and weekend service.

The MTA says the cuts will save about $100 million.

The agency also is trying to reduce overtime and has given pink slips to hundreds of workers to cut costs.

Gavaad Yerushalayim Seeks Assistance from UK Tzibur IN Regards To Emanuel

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Gavaad Eida Chareidis HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Tuvia Weiss Shlita has sent a letter to Gavaad London, HaGaon HaRav Akiva Padwa Shlita, to do whatever he can to assist the askanim arriving in London who are seeking assistance in the Emanuel Beis Yaakov case.

The Gavaad explains that the children who were not accepted in the Beis Yaakov were rejected because of their lifestyle, not because of their ethnicity. The High Court of Justice ruled as it did, and as a result, the parents are truly in a difficult situation.

The Gavaad asks that the tzibur do whatever it can to assist the askanim arriving in London doing what they can to assist the Emanuel families.

Op-Ed: Some Facts About The Emanuel Crisis

Friday, June 25th, 2010

It has become apparent that the media’s presentation of the situation in Emanuel, Israel, is grossly distorted. For the sake of clarity, I would like to state the facts about the circumstances.

First and foremost the parents are following the direction of gedoli yisroel including Maran Hagoan Harav Eliyasiv shlita, Maran Hagoan Harav Steinman Shlita, Maran Hagon Harav Chaim Kaniefsky Shlita, Maran Hagon Harav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz Shlta as well as many others.

For those of you who don’t know, the Bais Yaakov School in Emanuel was sued for discrimination against Sephardim. The petitioner in this case is not a resident of Emmanuel and never was. He is an individual that is backed by The New Foundation of Israel which works along with the reform movement to uproot Torah Jewry the same group that was behind the “Goldstone Report” against Israel in “Operation Cast Iron”. There was no opposition by the parents in Emmanuel to the Bais Yakov School in fact it was applauded by the residents when it was established because of the diverse background of the Emmanuel. The Residents have made no claims of discrimination. This town was chosen as a test case to uproot Chinuch Atzami Schools from Israel so the reform movement could snake their ways into religious homes. A case of discrimination was started in Emmanuel because it’s a small poor town the chances to succeed because the parents lacked the means to defend themselves. They prey on the weak and defenseless.

In reality, the school’s student body does presently consist of many wonderful, charedi, Sephardic girls. All the parents that refused to send their children to school lest they be tainted by their classmates’ negative influences were sentenced to two weeks prison time: the fathers are presently serving and the mothers will serve upon their husbands’ release.

The imprisonment of the parents is entirely unjust because:

1) Over 35% of the student body is Sephardic. Their parents make up 35% of the incarcerated.
2)The parents’ Civil Rights have been violated as follows:

A) The parents are not the named defendants in the case. This sentence only occurred through an abhorrent miscarriage of justice and a complete disregard for any judicial procedure.

If one were to go through the court transcripts, they would see that the judge repeatedly admonishes the parents to remain silent because they are not a party!  So how did this non-party end up being fined and jailed? It is a case of Incarceration without representation!

B) All parents in Israel have the liberty to choose where and how to educate their children whether they are Arab, Christian, or Jewish. This includes homeschooling. Now this right is being taken from the charedi parents.

It is clear that we are dealing with a judge whose hatred for charedim has transformed him from an impartial jurist to a vehement, first degree anti-Semite.  Not since the era of Stalin has religious education been challenged thus.

Imagine in the United States if the government forced all Jewish schools from all walks of Judaism to be “integrated” we would all scream in unison we are not racists for having separate schools we have different values and standards and that’s why there is a full spectrum of schools so we each have a school thank g-d to educate our children according to our understanding and way. In Emanuel any girl regardless of her Jewish lineage would have been accepted as long as the polices of the school were followed

This is a battle for chinuch yehudi- Let us stand with our brothers!

Thank You

Yidedie Emanuel.

Lalum Calls on High Court to Release Emanuel Parents Before Shabbos

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The Noar K’halacha organization headed by Yoav Lalum has called on the High Court of Justice to release the Emanuel fathers before shabbos, to suspend their sentence for two months, apparently seeking to place their jail time on hold until such time an agreement will be achieved to permit their release.

The state on the other hand experessed objections to the petition, stating the only way the Emanuel fathers can be released is if they agree to abide by the rulings of the High Court of Justice, which happens to be contrary to the rulings of Gedolei Yisrael Shlita.

YWN Mailbag: Summer 2010 Appeal

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Dear YWN,

I would like to inform those that vacation in the Catskills of the “Summer 2010 appeal”.

This is not an appeal for a family, a specific person, or organization but rather a cause. That cause is Kiddush Hashem.

Many people do not realize that for 10 months a year the Catskill Mountains is a quiet peaceful and clean environment. Traffic jams are unheard of and the roadways are clear of pedestrians. Long lines in stores are virtually non-existent.

Then comes memorial day and the entire scenery changes. Pickup trucks are replaced with Honda Odyssey’s, empty roadways and shops become hustling and bustling with shoppers and children of all ages.

Route 42 on erev Shabbos transforms into 13th avenue as people are getting their last minute items L’kovod Shabbos.

Lines in stores like Shoprite and Wal-mart resemble Pomegranate or Goldbergs.

To those of us living in Brooklyn this seems perfectly normal. However if you live in the country all year this becomes a ‘Tircha’.

True everyone is entitled to come and vacation in the mountains, however we should realize that we are doing just that. We are guests, and those whose reside upstate all year are our hosts.

The least we can do is show our gracious hosts some courtesy. It may not seem like such a big deal, but greeting a store keeper, thanking a cashier, letting someone who is a year round resident go ahead of you in line can have a tremendous positive impact and display of Hakoras Hatov.

Also please realize that stopping on the road in front of your colony “even for a second” is not the same as double parking in front of your house or on Coney Island avenue. To someone that lives upstate it’s as if you blocked their driveway (and we all know how frustrating that is). The same goes for those walking on the road. Please try to keep to the side of the road and allow cars to pass.

Those of you walking at night please wear something reflective or roll up your sleeves. Perhaps we don’t realize how this makes a large difference because in the city we have lighted streets.

I’m sure those of you commenting will be able to offer more positive suggestions.

In the Z’chus of our display of Kiddush Hashem may we be zocha to a healthy and happy summer.

As soon as the driver opened the straps the load fell on the driver, crushing him, and killing him instantly.

He was pronounced DOA on the scene by FDNY Paramedics.

The NYPD Highway Division is on the scene conducting an investigation, and Misaskim is on the scene awaiting an ID on the victim.

There is no disruption to train traffic – as per the NYC OEM.

Tab For Gulf Oil Disaster Tops $2.3 Billion

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Costs associated with the Gulf oil disaster have gone up more than $300 million in less than a week, BP said Friday.

“The cost of the response to date amounts to approximately $2.35 billion, including the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid and federal costs,” a company statement said. BP put the tab at $2 billion on Monday.

The company previously agreed to set aside $20 billion in an escrow account for spill-related costs, a sum that does not cover fees and penalties that could be imposed by the federal government.

“To date, almost 74,000 claims have been filed and more than 39,000 payments have been made, totaling almost $126 million,” the company said.

According to BP, approximately 37,000 personnel, more than 4,500 vessels and some 100 aircraft are involved in the response effort.

The news came a day after BP’s stock price hit a new low. The troubled oil giant’s stock closed Thursday at $28.74 a share — down 52 percent since April 20, when its Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 workers.

Paving the way for drilling to resume, a federal judge Thursday denied a request to keep a six-month moratorium in place pending a government appeal.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman in New Orleans, Louisiana, issued a preliminary injunction against the ban Tuesday. The government had asked Feldman to delay lifting the ban until an appeals court reviewed the issue later this summer.

The moratorium was imposed by President Obama on May 27. The moratorium prohibited drilling in more than 500 feet of water and prevented new permits from being issued.

In an emergency hearing Thursday, the judge denied the government’s motion to stay his decision pending appeal “for the same reasons given” Tuesday for issuing the injunction.

Government lawyers did not file an appeal to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday, though the expected move could come as soon as Friday.

In Tuesday’s ruling, Feldman wrote, “An invalid agency decision to suspend drilling of wells in depths of over 500 feet simply cannot justify the immeasurable effect on the plaintiffs (oil drilling support companies), the local economy, the Gulf region, and the critical present-day aspect of the availability of domestic energy in this country.”

The government has 30 days to show it is beginning to comply with Feldman’s order and start issuing permits. The appeals process can continue, but until the appeal, the government must act as if Feldman’s order will be upheld.

Meanwhile, the full Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee met Thursday to consider bills related to Minerals Management Service reform and to offshore drilling. Committee member Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyoming, said the Obama administration is putting ideology over scientific integrity.

“The administration put together a group of experts to review safety recommendations for offshore oil and gas exploration,” Barrasso said. “The administration proudly stated that the safety recommendations were peer reviewed. Well, afterwards, the American people found out that the most significant recommendation — which was the moratorium — was not actually peer reviewed. The moratorium was added after the experts had been consulted. The majority of the experts consulted say that their names were used to justify a political decision made by the administration.”

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana, responded, “When your team was in charge, which would be under the previous administration, you didn’t leave a very clear instruction book as to how to do this. And in defense of this administration … the president is trying to rise above partisanship. And I think we all have to make our best effort to do this. This is not a time to try to take what I would consider a cheap shot.”

Homes Destroyed As Storm Rips Through NY

Friday, June 25th, 2010

People in parts of Queens and Long Island are still cleaning up Friday morning – and probably will be for weeks to come – after Thursday night’s storm left behind everything from downed power lines to roads clogged with fallen trees.

Mayor Bloomberg’s late night update on Thursday’s storm probably didn’t break any news.

“If you hadn’t heard, there are dozens of trees and power lines that were knocked down by high winds,” Bloomberg said.

A brief but powerful thunderstorm tore across Queens. And on Long Island, trees were uprooted and tossed about like twigs. The damage was extensive, and with so many power lines down, thousands are still in the dark Friday morning.

As of Friday morning, there were still more than 16,000 homes with no electricity on Long Island.

Deri Working to Resolve Emanuel Dispute

Friday, June 25th, 2010

As the Emanuel fathers continue serving their two-week prison sentence, former Shas leader Aryeh Deri appears to be making progress towards a solution that may bring an end to the unprecedented affair. Deri has been working with a vaad, a committee, one that includes prominent names towards hammering out a solution.

Kol HaChareidi is reporting that the members of the vaad are going to appear before the High Court of Justice on Sunday and detail the points of the agreement, which reportedly received the bracha of the Sanz Rebbe Shlita.

Prominent Yerushalmi Sanz chossid Dayan Rav Yaakov Cohen reports the Rebbe Shlita has endorsed the agreement. Rav Cohen is the author of the sefer Emek HaMishpat and was a dayan in the beis din of HaGaon HaRav Nissim Karelitz Shlita, and today serves as a dayan on a private beis din.

The limited information available indicates that Dayan Cohen has been working with HaGaon HaRav David Yosef, and he already contacted R’ Aryeh Deri to become involved before the father were imprisoned, but that effort failed. It appears that Dayan Cohen was not deterred and continued his efforts, albeit behind the scenes.

Deri brought prominent attorney Ram Caspi into the picture, also known for being a top notch negotiator. Other personalities involved include HaGaon HaRav Yosef Efrati Shlita, Deputy Minister Meir Porush, MK Moshe Gafne, and Yoav Lalum. Reports indicate that Dayan Cohen has been seen over recent days at the home of the Slonimer Rebbe Shlita.

Kiryas Joel Woman Wins $5 Million Settlement for Truck Crash

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The NY Daily News reports:

An upstate Hasidic woman won a whopping $5 million legal settlement in a lawsuit over a Sept. 11, 2007, crash with a Brooklyn kosher-meat delivery truck in which she was seriously injured.

Eva Bickel, 50, suffered a brain injury and broken bones when the truck crossed yellow lines on a Monroe, N.Y., road and collided head-on with the livery cab she was in, according to her suit.

“[The driver] definitely wasn’t acting very kosher,” Bickel’s lawyer, Herb Subin, said yesterday.

The married mother of three children underwent four surgeries and spent more than six weeks in a hospital and nursing home.

The case had already gone to trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court when the truck company, Alle Processing Corp., settled on Tuesday.

“This woman needs a lifetime of future care and the pain and suffering was substantial,” Subin said.

Board Votes to Raise Rents on NYC’s Rent-Stabilized Apartments

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The city’s Rent Guidelines Board voted to raise rents on the city’s rent-stabilized apartments Thursday night.

The board approved the increases of 2.25 percent for one-year leases and 4.5 percent for two-year leases after not passing four motions submitted by members.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is opposed to the approval.

“Bit by bit, we are turning our City’s affordable housing stock into a once-affordable memory. It is disappointing to hear that the Rent Guidelines Board has chosen to stick with its annual rent hike at a time when so many New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet,” he said.

“With vacancy rates below 3% and the City losing thousands of rent stabilized units each year, this decision brings us one step closer to a housing crisis. I am committed to working with tenants, landlords and my colleagues in government to make sure that we protect our City’s vital affordable housing stock and all of the New Yorkers who will see their rents climb even higher next year.”

Calls for Serious Action on Behalf of Gilad Shalit

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Miki Goldwasser, the mother of IDF soldier Ehud Goldwasser who was killed by Hizbullah terrorists, had harsh words for government officials regarding their actions on behalf of Gilad Shalit.

Mrs. Goldwasser stated that hanging a picture of Gilad Shalit in one’s office and releasing statement that you are working for his release is simply not enough, making her remarks during a Netanya rally calling for his release as we mark his fourth anniversary in Hamas captivity.

Regarding the controversy surrounding a possible prisoner release deal to obtain Gilad’s release, Mrs. Goldwasser stated that the government must pay for its failures. The activists marched on Gilad’s behalf, marking his fourth anniversary in captivity, calling on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to make the difficult decisions to bring Gilad home.

Mitchell’s August Visit on Hold

Friday, June 25th, 2010

According to officials in the Prime Minister’s Office, US Mideast envoy George Mitchell will not be visiting in August to monitor efforts to jumpstart peace efforts between the PA (Palestinian Authority) and Israel, explaining the harsh Mideast summer heat is too much for Mitchell, who will be vacationing in Maine instead. That said, the statement reads that members of Mitchell’s team will remain in area to monitor developments.

In a somewhat related matter, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday wrapped up a US visit, meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Barak reportedly spoke with the senior American administration official about pressuring PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) into agreeing to enter into direct talks with Israel now, as suggested by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

According to a Channel 10 News report on Thursday, Barak is working to advance diplomatic efforts on the Syrian track, involving his senior advisors in such efforts, including Uri Saguy, a former chief of military intelligence and a retired IDF major-general. Officials in the Defense Minister deny such efforts are taking place.

Speaker Quinn & Mayor Bloomberg Restore Priority 7 Daycare Vouchers

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Brooklyn, NY – Despite a historic $3.2 billion deficit in the year’s budget, Councilman David G. Greenfield announced that a deal had been reached between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn to restore the funding for Priority 7 Day Care Vouchers in this year’s budget. Specifically, the program which costs the city $12 million this year will be funded for half a year, at a cost of $6 million, and will be revisited in January 2011.

“Thanks to the extraordinary leadership of Speaker Christine Quinn and the incredible generosity of Mayor Mike Bloomberg, we were able to save the most important government program serving the Orthodox Jewish community in New York. Now, thousands of needy children and families will continue to benefit from the Priority 7 childcare and after-school programs,” explained Councilman Greenfield. “In this tough budget year, this was the fiscally responsible thing to do, as Priority 7 actually saves the city money over traditional city-funded daycare.” The cost of Priority 7 is approximately $7,000 per-child per-year, while the cost of traditional daycare is nearly $13,000 a year.

Greenfield led a three month full-time effort, along with four other Councilmembers, to restore the Priority 7 vouchers. The “Brooklyn Five,” as they were known at City Hall, was led by Greenfield and included Councilmembers Steve Levin, Brad Lander, Letitia James and Lew Fidler. This dynamic group led rallies, arranged for press conferences, met with the ACS Commissioner, and this past Tuesday – delivered more than 12,000 letters from their constituents to Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson urging the Mayor to restore funding to Priority 7.

“I am overjoyed to announce the extension of Priority 7 vouchers,” said Councilman Steve Levin. “I want to thank Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Quinn for restoring these funds. This will ensure affordable childcare for thousands of our most vulnerable families.” “I am pleased that this essential after-school and childcare funding for needy families will continue thanks to the strong leadership of Speaker Quinn and Mayor Bloomberg,” said Councilman Brad Lander.

”It was not fair to ask people to choose between going to work and taking care of their kids,” said Councilman Lew Fidler. “I am delighted that we have restored one-half year’s worth of Priority 7 vouchers.”

The “Brooklyn Five” were joined in their advocacy efforts by Councilmembers Jimmy Oddo, Vinnie Ignizio and Debi Rose of Staten Island, Councilmembers Leroy Comrie, Karen Koslowitz, James Sanders and Mark Weprin of Queens, as well as Councilmembers Mathieu Eugene, Mike Nelson, and Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn and Councilmembers Annabel Palma, Oliver Koppel, Jimmy Vacca, Joel Rivera and Fernando Cabrera of the Bronx. City Council Finance Chair Domenic M. Recchia, Jr. played a critical role as an honest broker between the negotiating parties.

“The Orthodox Jewish community owes a debt of gratitude to Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Finance Chairman Domenic M. Recchia, Jr. and the four other Councilmembers who led this effort – Councilman Steve Levin, Councilman Brad Lander, Councilwoman Letitia James and veteran Councilman Lew Fidler.” said Greenfield. “This has been a tough fight in past years. However, because of the multi-billion dollar deficit, no one expected us to be successful in restoring these funds this year. Thanks to Siyata DiShmaya, and the combined hishtadlus of the councilmembers and the thousands of parents who wrote letters, the Orthodox Jewish community will continue to benefit from these vital Priority 7 vouchers.”

UN Chief Calls Israeli Construction Plan Illegal

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon called Jerusalem City Hall’s King’s Garden plan illegal. He is referring to the plan that entails razing 22 illegal Arab sector homes in the eastern capital towards clearing away the area for a major park project. As was reported earlier, the homes were constructed illegally on state-owned land.

The UN’s highest-ranking official called the plan “unhelpful and illegal”, expressing “deep concern” over such a move, which he stressed would be a violation of international law.

Immediately after the Jerusalem Planning Committee announced its approval for the plan, the US Department of State issued its message of disapproval, which was met shortly thereafter with a message from the Prime Minister’s Office, indicating that the plan is a long way from being implemented so there is no cause for concern.

In a related matter, the Prime Minister’s Office continues to instruct Minister of Public Security Yitzchak Aharonovich to prevent the demolition of illegal Arab homes in the capital as well as preventing the eviction of Arab squatters from the old Yemenite shul located near Beit Yehonatan in the Shiloach area of the capital.

President Peres Meets Austrian Chancellor Faymann

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

President Shimon Peres this morning (Thursday) held a working meeting with visiting Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann.  In his statement at the start of the meeting, President Peres said that, “I recommend that European leaders return to the doctrine of former Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky and former German Chancellor Willy Brandt, who pressed Israel into accepting the late Yasser Arafat into the Socialist International.  I told my European colleagues then that we would be very pleased if Europe could succeed in turning Arafat into a socialist and a democrat.  And indeed, as I look back at history, I believe that it was European pressure that changed his positions – he accepted UN Security Council Resolution #242, declared a condemnation of terrorism, recognized Israel and entered into negotiations.  We have the same story now in Gaza.  Today, Europe could turn to Hamas, which controls Gaza, and pressure its leaders into supporting negotiations toward peace, recognizing Israel, and stopping the weapons smuggling and acts of terrorism.  Then there would be a different Gaza, open and moderate, a Gaza of peace.  I reiterate that we have no interest in Gaza.  We have no interest in going back to Gaza.  We have no interest in the suffering of the Gazan people.  We left Gaza voluntarily and I do not understand the flotillas.  In order to change the situation in Gaza, there is no need for flotillas or activists but a change in Hamas’s terrorism policy.  Austria is currently a member of the UN Security Council.  You are a leader in Europe.  Austria could aid in passing on this message.”

President Peres referred to the flotillas that are trying to break the naval blockade on Gaza and said that, “Terrorist organizations – Hezbollah, Hamas and the Iranians – have taken over the flotillas and are not interested in peace, they are looking for provocations and conflict.”

At the end of his statement, President Peres told Austrian Chancellor Faymann: “I thank you for Austria’s clear position on Iran and for the leadership that you and your government have shown towards Israel.  You have come at the right time and since Austria has aided change in the Middle East, my suggestion is that you continue.  I am certain that such an effort will be fruitful.”

Austrian Chancellor Faymann thanked President Peres for his warm remarks and said that, “I am certain that you have an important role to play in the Middle East and in supporting the peace process.  Austria supports the solution of two states for two peoples.  We are convinced that the peace process, now based on the proximity talks, must move to direct negotiations.  We are convinced the quality of life in Gaza must be improved and in order to do so there is a need for the blockade on Gaza to be lifted.  On the other hand, we believe that Israel’s security concerns, especially the prevention of weapons smuggling, are an important condition that cannot be violated.  Therefore, this is an important period in which all possibilities of dialogue must be supported.  For me, dialogue is always the best path in this region.”

Chancellor Faymann also said that, “As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, we supported the sanctions against Iran since we are concerned over the development of nuclear weapons there.  This was a clear statement by the UN and the Security Council.  This was a clear statement by Europe and the US.  Thank you for the opportunity to hold talks in your country.  Austria will do its utmost to advance and support the peace process.”

After the statements, the two leaders held a working meeting, during which the President said that, “Most European leaders have not experienced war in the past 60 years and do not know what it is like to live with terrorist attacks against innocents.  Israel truly desires peace with its neighbors, especially the Palestinians, but we cannot close our eyes to the dangers.  We will never be able to compromise on Israel’s security.  Defending our children takes precedence over all media and public opinion and Europe must understand this.  The process of delegitimizing Israel is, in recent days, being encouraged by Iran, Al Qaida, Hamas and Hezbollah.  Europe must wake up and understand that the danger will, in the end, reach them as well.  Lebanon has become a Syrian-Iranian weapons depot.  Hezbollah fractured and destroyed Lebanon just like Hamas is destroying the Palestinian people.  Hamas has publicly stated that it seeks to destroy Israel and we have concrete and clear information about its acts of terrorism, weapons smuggling and building up of an arsenal of missiles in order to attack Israel.  Therefore, Israel cannot countenance the free entry of ships carrying missiles and war materiel directly from Iran, Syria and Lebanon to Gaza.”

In response to a question about the possibility of resuming negotiations with Syria, President Peres told Chancellor Faymann that, “They cannot forge a terrorism alliance with Iran on one hand and talk peace with Israel on the other.  Assad supports Hezbollah, feeds it with money and rockets and denies everything.  He denies that he is building a nuclear reactor and that he is transferring long-range missiles to Hezbollah, and is attempting to deceive the West.”

At the end of their meeting, Austrian Chancellor Faymann said that Austria would like to assist in advancing the peace process and that he believes that strengthening Gaza and its economy would prevent the Palestinians living in Gaza from turning to support the extremist organizations and would lead to a significant increase in support for peace negotiations with Israel.”

Budget Agreement: NYC Spares 20 Fire Houses

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

WCBSTV is reporting that a New York City budget agreement is expected to be reached Thursday night.

Budget negotiations between the city and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have resulted in the decision to restore the 20 fire houses that were slated to be closed. They will all now remain open, after negotiations resulted in the restoration of $37 million to ensure that they stay open.

In addition, the city will not be laying off 4,200 teachers, but 2,000 will go due to attrition, as was planned.

Agreements are also expected on how to pay for library service, which will go from six days to five, and senior citizen services, but it is the mayor’s intention to get the budget done without any tax increases.
