NYC Board Of Elections Pulls Polling Place From Brooklyn ‘Christian Messianic Center’ After Orthodox Uproar

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

A messianic Christian center backed out of hosting a Brooklyn polling place Monday amid an outcry from upset Orthodox Jewish voters.

The Board of Elections had tapped Life in Messiah – an evangelical group to host voting for four election districts in Midwood.

The polling place was switched to the center from a nearby public school that isn’t accessible to the handicapped.

Jewish voters complained to the board, noting their strict faith wouldn’t allow them to vote at the center.

The controversy prompted the Christian group to pull the plug.

“We have a deep love and respect for our Jewish neighbors,” said development officer Marilyn Miller. “We understand that coming into a Messianic Center might be uncomfortable for some. … The right to vote is a valued freedom, one we do not wish to hinder in any way.”

Board attorney Stephen Richmond said there were no rules against having a religious facility serve as a polling site. “We’re now scrambling at this point,” he said. If officials can’t find a substitute spot by Nov. 2, voting will take place at Public School 119.

Community activists credit NYS Assemblywoman Helena Weinstein for this accomplishment.

Iran: Bushehr Nuclear Plant Fueled

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Iran has begun injecting uranium fuel rods into the core of Bushehr’s nuclear power plant, the Islamic Republic’s Press TV reported Tuesday.

Some 163 fuel rods are being loaded into the core, and once the process is finished, it will be rendered fully operational. Tehran said it expected the plant to begin generating electricity in early 2011.

The Bushehr nuclear facility operates under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The construction of the Bushehr plant started in 1975 when Germany signed a contract with Iran. Germany, however, pulled out of the project following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran then signed a deal with Russia in 1995, under which the plant was originally scheduled to be completed in 1999, but completion of the project was repeatedly delayed. The nuclear power plant was finally finished with the help of Russia following a three-decade delay.

The reactor was launched in August amid a standoff with the United States and its allies over allegations that the Islamic Republic is following a military nuclear program.

Iran also started loading fuel into the Bushehr nuclear plant on Tuesday.

Iran says the Russian-built, 1,000-mw nuclear plant will start producing energy in early 2011 after years of delays and that its launch shows the West is wrong to accuse it of seeking to develop atomic bombs.

Iraqi Court Sentences Tariq Aziz To Death

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Tariq Aziz, one of the best-known faces of the Iraqi government from 1981 to 2003, was sentenced to death Tuesday by the Iraqi High Tribunal court for his role in eliminating religious parties during Saddam Hussein’s regime, Iraq’s State Television reported.

In March 2009, Aziz was sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the 1992 executions of 42 merchants.

Aziz served as deputy prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and also held the post of foreign minister for part of that time.

Abed Hameed Mahmoud and Sadoon Shaker, top former regime Baathists, were also sentenced to death for their involvement, State TV said.

Bloomberg’s Latest On Terms: 3 For Him, But Only 2 For Everyone Else

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg thinks that being able to serve three terms in office is a good idea — just not for anyone else.

On Monday, in an unexpected confession, Mr. Bloomberg said he wanted to reverse the changes to the city’s term-limits law, which he successfully campaigned for in 2008. Those changes are now the subject of a little-publicized ballot initiative on Election Day.

The mayor said he would vote to restore a limit of two terms, down from three, and to ban the City Council from rewriting the rule for sitting elected officials, closing a legislative loophole that Mr. Bloomberg exploited in his quest to remain in office beyond eight years. The results of the ballot initiative would not affect Mr. Bloomberg, but would affect his successors.

During a news conference, the mayor said that the term-limits initiative, which will appear on the back of the paper ballots on Nov. 2, was imperfect and badly designed, but that he would support it anyway.

“It’s better than what we have now,” Mr. Bloomberg said, without explaining why or acknowledging that his administration had written the existing law and heavily advocated for it.

It was the latest installment in the story of Mr. Bloomberg’s ever-evolving relationship with term limits. An outspoken supporter of two terms, he once called Council members who proposed extending them “disgraceful.” Then, as his own time in office wound down, he reversed himself and advocated for three terms, saying they offered voters greater choice.

“You can make that case for two terms or three terms,” he said at the time. “In this case, after listening to everybody, I’ve been convinced that three terms is right.”

Now he seems to have settled on something of a compromise: three terms for him, and only him.

Mayoral allies pointed out that Mr. Bloomberg had kept his word by bringing the issue back to voters, who originally passed the two-term limit in a 1993 referendum, only to watch it be dismantled by the mayor and the Council.

Mr. Bloomberg’s sudden support for two terms puts him in line with most New Yorkers. A New York Times poll, conducted in August, found that nearly three-fourths of city voters favored undoing Mr. Bloomberg’s 2008 actions.

The mayor’s change of opinion will avert a showdown with a fellow billionaire, Ronald S. Lauder, the father of the city’s original 1993 law, who has opened his wallet to sponsor a commercial urging New Yorkers to vote for a return to two terms.

The advertisement, which will be broadcast over the next few days, instructs voters — with a wry tagline — to turn over their ballots to find the term-limits question and vote yes. “Flip over the ballot,” a narrator says, “and flip off the politicians.”

‘Worst Storm In 70 Years’ Bears Down On Chicago

Monday, October 25th, 2010

A combination of strong thunderstorms, followed by violent and destructive winds, will make for one of the Midwest’s most dangerous storms in 70 years.

When Tuesday morning comes around, the Chicago area will be slammed with furious thunderstorms as a cold front passes over the area.

Damaging winds will likely be a component of the thunderstorms, and there is a risk of tornadoes, CBS 2’s Mary Kleist reports.

The severe storms are expected to sweep into the area between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. Tuesday, coming in the form of a squall line, which often means strong straight-line winds. The storms will be at their heaviest during the Tuesday morning rush.

The rain and severe storms will pass out of the area by midday, but at that point, high and dangerous winds will roar into the area.

The winds will maintain a sustained speed of 35 to 40 mph, and may gust to 55 mph or more. They will be most severe north of Interstate 88, particularly along the Wisconsin border, Kleist said.

Over Lake Michigan, hurricane-force winds are possible.

After sundown Tuesday, the winds will die down a little bit, only to pick up again after sunrise Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service advises unsecured objects may become airborne. Falling tree limbs and sporadic power outages can be expected. Travel may become difficult with high profile vehicles becoming difficult to control.

The severe weather system is coming in the form of a cyclone, a low-pressure system of closed, spiraling motion. The system is, in fact, being dubbed the “Great Lakes Cyclone.”

The low barometric pressure in the system is contributing significantly to the severity of the storm. CBS 2’s Megan Glaros says the minimum pressure in the system could drop to an extraordinarily low reading of 960 millibars.

As the storm passes, the temperatures will drop quickly. The forecast high for Thursday is a mere 49 degrees.

The National Weather Service reports that based on its records, this will probably be one of the most powerful storm in 70 years.

NYPD Crackdown On Drivers Using Cell Phones

Monday, October 25th, 2010

The New York City Police Department announced that it will be cracking down enforcement on drivers using their cell phones behind the wheel in the city.

The New York Distracted Driving, Talking and Texting law, passed in December 2001, was most recently updated in July 2009, makes it illegal for motorists in the state of New York to use a cell phone while driving, unless the phone is hands-free.

The crackdown will be 24 hours, beginning at midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 26. It is part of a department-wide initiative that has been investigating and trying to prevent auto accidents that result in fatalities. Distracted driving, the department said, has been a huge problem on that front.

“The NYPD reminds all New Yorkers that the use of a hand-held cell phone while driving a vehicle is illegal,” the department’s communications office said in a statement. “In addition, driving while texting or talking on a cell phone is dangerous and endangers both drivers and pedestrians.”

Fines for distracted driving — specifically using a cell phone or portable electronic device behind the wheel — can be up to $130. Last year, the NYPD issued more than 600 summonses a day to drivers who were violating the law. On July 22, 2009, during a crackdown initiative nearly identical to the event planned for Tuesday, more than 6,000 tickets were handed out. The event will begin Tuesday at 12 a.m. and last until 12 a.m. on Wednesday.

$600,000 Check Written By NY Jewish Millionaire To Bnei Brak Rabbi Goes Missing; Blackmailer Arrested By Cops Posing As Hotel Waiters

Monday, October 25th, 2010

The following is a Ynet article:

Members taking part in the dubious meeting at the Carlton Hotel in Tel Aviv were likely surprised to receive such courteous service from the hotel waiters. They had no idea that these waiters were actually part of a special undercover police unit playing dress-up. The waiters were only interested in documenting an extortion meeting between an important religious personality and the suspects held at the hotel.

Special detectives arrested suspects in an extortion and threat case of an important and influential Bnei Brak rabbi in Tel Aviv on Monday afternoon.

According to police intelligence, some of the suspects belong to crime organizations, so the meeting was held in a hotel due to a growing concern of criminal entanglement and the suspects’ money demands.

This odd case began a few weeks back, when a Jewish millionaire living in New York wanted to know what happened to his $600,000 donation he had given a well know religious personality in the ultra-Orthodox sector in Bnei Brak. When he arrived in Israel and was not welcomed by the religious personality, he began worrying about what might have happened to his money.

When his assistants approached the rabbi, he said that he had never received the money.

At this point, mediators steps in offering to help return the money to the American millionaire. One of these mediators turned to a well know criminal, who in return demanded $50,000 fee for retrieving the donation sum, however the criminal and his associates demanded to get their fee using extortion and threats.

The well-known religious personality and his people were afraid of making things worse and decided to involve the police in the matter.

This is how the meeting in Carlton Hotel came about. The head of the investigation, Chief Inspector Avi Goldin, prepared for the meeting ahead of time, placing recording and listening devices in the hotel lobby. The “head waiter” was Chief Superintendent Yoav Cotler.

Within a short while, all the characters met in the lobby and began to threaten the religious personality, demanding he return the donation money. At the end of the meeting, the police arrested the extortion suspects and since then has extended their arrest a few times.

The Magistrate Court in Tel Aviv approved publicizing the affair, but has yet to release the names of those involved.

Snickerdoodle Mandelbroit

Monday, October 25th, 2010

You can never have enough different kinds of mandelbroit recipes is my philosophy.  Here is a simple one – but you know, simple is frequently the best.

2-3/4 cups flour

1 cup sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 tablespoon oil

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 eggs

1 egg white

Cinnamon-sugar mixture (2 tablespoons sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Stir together dry ingredients.  Beat together oil, vanilla and eggs.  Stir into flour mixture; dough will be on the dry side.  Knead the dough until it comes together and then divide into two logs.  Place on a greased baking sheet.  Brush with egg white and then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.  Bake for 30 minutes.  Carefully cut into ½-inch slices.  Return to oven for an additional 10 minutes.  Cool on wire rack.  Great with your morning, afternoon or evening coffee.

Obama Excitement Wanes as Young Voters Tune Out U.S. Election

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Indiana University professor Gerald Wright opened his class on congressional elections by asking students if they saw the previous night’s school-sponsored U.S. House candidate debate a few blocks from campus.

Among almost 60 students, three hands went up.

“Most students don’t care about elections in general,” 20-year-old sophomore Melody Mostow said after the class last week. “In most midterm elections, there’s not that central person for us to rally around.”

The thrill is gone for many voters under age 30 who turned out in 2008 to vote for President Barack Obama by a 2-1 nationwide margin. That support represented the biggest schism between young and older voters in a presidential election since exit polling began in 1972, according to the Pew Research Center in Washington.

This year, fewer than three in 10 voters under age 30 say they will definitely cast ballots in the Nov. 2 congressional elections, down from 36 percent 11 months ago, according to a poll by Harvard University’s Institute of Politics released Oct. 21.

That’s disheartening for Democrats like Representative Baron Hill in southeast Indiana. His race may hinge on support from younger voters on a sprawling, hilly campus of old stone halls who helped swell his 2008 victory margin to 58 percent. It was his biggest win ever in a district that voted Republican in the previous three presidential elections and includes the 42,000-student university in Bloomington.

Fed Details Response to Foreclosure Crisis

Monday, October 25th, 2010

The U.S. Federal Reserve presented a report detailing its efforts to help Americans cope with the foreclosure crisis, and Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a speech that federal banking regulators expect preliminary results of their review of the nation’s latest foreclosure mess to be ready next month.

“We are looking intensively at the firms’ policies, procedures and internal controls related to foreclosures and seeking to determine whether systematic weaknesses are leading to improper foreclosures,” Bernanke said at a Fed and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. sponsored conference on foreclosures and the future of housing finance. Bernanke didn’t address monetary policy or the economic outlook in his speech.

Following the financial crisis, the Fed last year launched a controversial $1.7 trillion bond-buying program to help keep mortgage rates low. What’s less known is that the central bank has also been working to respond to the foreclosure crisis on “Main Street,” using its research and regulation functions to support foreclosure prevention and neighborhood stabilization strategies in local communities.

The report, presented alongside a Chicago Fed housing conference with Bernanke, comes amid recent concerns about questionable foreclosures, along with the recent frenzy of disclosures about so-called robo-signers who raced through paperwork without reviewing it.

U.S. banking regulators have been reviewing reports that some of the nation’s largest mortgage servicers are improperly foreclosing on homes, using questionable practices and making significant errors along the way. “We take violations of proper procedures seriously,” Bernanke said.

RI Dem: Obama Can ‘Take His Endorsement & Shove It…Treating Us Like ATM Machine’

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Hours before President Barack Obama was set to arrive in Rhode Island, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio had some less than hospitable words for the leader of the free world.

When asked about the president’s decision not to endorse him in the race for governor, Caprio said Obama could “take his endorsement and shove it” and called the decision “Washington insider politics at its worst.”

President Obama is set to arrive in Rhode Island Monday afternoon, where he is expected to first tour a local company and then attend two fundraisers to benefit congressional candidates David Cicilline and Jim Langevin.

Caprio, who is scheduled to appear with Obama at two events Monday, criticized the president for failing to visit Rhode Rhode Island after historic flooding devastated much of the state back in March.

“We had one of the worst floods in the history of the United States a few months back and President Obama didn’t even do a flyover of Rhode Island,” Caprio said during the radio interview. “He ignored us and now he’s coming into Rhode Island and treating us like an ATM machine.”

Caprio is running neck-and-neck with independent candidate Lincoln Chafee. The former Republican senator endorsed Obama’s presidential run in 2008.

Republican John Robitaille and Moderate Ken Block are also running for Rhode Island governor.

Hikind Asks For Community Assistance In Solving Hate Crime

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) is asking for the community’s assistance in solving a hate crime. Yesterday, Hikind was informed by an askan that two Polish men were shouting “Heil Hitler!” at Jewish individuals on the corner of 49th Street and 12th Avenue.

Assemblyman Hikind contacted the 66th precinct, and officers responded in a matter of minutes. The perpetrators were eventually caught at Ft. Hamilton Parkway between 51st and 52nd Streets. Unfortunately, because no victims remained at the scene, the police were unable to arrest these two men. The police have advised that if even one person who was verbally assaulted comes forward to press charges, the police can proceed with the arrests.

If you were a victim of this hate crime or know someone who was, please contact the Office of Assemblyman Hikind immediately at 718.853.9616.

Sony Retires The Cassette ‘Walkman’ After 30 Years

Monday, October 25th, 2010

After retiring the floppy disk in March, Sony has halted the manufacture and distribution of another now-obsolete technology: the cassette Walkman, the first low-cost, portable music player.

The final batch was shipped to Japanese retailers in April, according to IT Media. Once these units are sold, new cassette Walkmans will no longer be available through the manufacturer.

The first generation Walkman was released on July 1, 1979 in Japan.

Although it later became a huge success, it only sold 3,000 units in its first month. Sony managed to sell some 200 million iterations of the cassette Walkman over the product line’s 30-year career.

Somewhat ironically, the announcement was delivered just one day ahead of the iPod’s ninth anniversary on October 23, although the decline of the cassette Walkman is attributed primarily to the explosive popularity of CD players in the ’90s, not the iPod.

Brooklyn Lawmaker Wants To Include Hookah Bars In Smoking Ban

Monday, October 25th, 2010

A Brooklyn lawmaker is trying to extend the city’s indoor smoking ban to hookah bars.

City Councilman Vincent Gentile says he will press this week to have the legal herbal smoke included in the city’s ban.

Gentile argues hookah smoke, containing tar and carbon monoxide, is just as dangerous as cigarette smoke.

Under the proposal, no new hookah bars would be allowed to open beginning in 2012.

Existing hookah bars would be required to register with the New York City Department of Health, and would not be allowed to expand or change locations.

YWN EXCLUSIVE: Chasidic Leaders Dump Schneiderman In Favor Of Dan Donovan For Attorney General [UPDATED]

Monday, October 25th, 2010

In a surprise move, over a dozen of the most influential leaders of the Chasidic sects of Satmar, Bobov, Munkatch, Klauzenberg, Boyan, Belz, Krasna and Ger have dumped their preferred primary candidate Democratic State Senator Eric Schneiderman to endorse Republican District Attorney Dan Donovan for Attorney General in the hotly contested General Election next week Tuesday, November 2nd.

Insiders say that these leaders considered supporting famed prosecutor Dan Donovan immediately after Schneiderman pledged his allegiance and office space to controversial activist Al Sharpton. Others were disturbed by the revelation that Schneiderman’s biggest financial supporter is the radical left-wing anti-Israel billionaire George Soros who has raised well over $100,000 for Schneiderman.

Still, for others, the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back was the report last week that Senator Schneiderman’s close colleagues in the Senate may have engaged in corruption regarding the distribution of a multi-billion dollar gambling contract at the Aqueduct Race Track in Queens. Schneiderman accepted over $75,000 from his Senate colleagues who have been cited in the Inspector General’s report detailing what may be illegal activities.

“Dan Donovan’s long, proven record of fighting crime and corruption make him the best choice to fight for and protect not only the members of our community but all of New York’s citizens,” said renowned Rabbi Aron Welz – the most prominent leader of the largest Chasidic sect in Boro Park.

Dan Donovan travelled to Boro Park yesterday to personally pick up the endorsements of: Rabbis Weltz, Goldberg, Dembitzer, Fischman, Lebowitz, Reicher, Barber, Langsam, Pinchas, Glauber, Tauber and Garfinkel to name a few. Donovan toured the famed institutions of Satmar, Bobov and Krasna before meeting with a larger Chasidic group for their formal endorsement.

These new endorsements put the Chasidic community on a direct collision course with local Democratic representative Assemblyman Dov Hikind and the lay leadership of Agudath Israel of America who have endorsed Schneiderman for Attorney General (in the primary election).

One political strategist explained, “These Donovan supporters and chasidic leaders seem like they are declaring their independence from the so-called ‘establishment’ once and for all.”

UPDATE: Rabbi Shmuel Lefkowitz, a spokesman for Agudath Israel of America, insists in an email to YWN that “ALL the Agudah LAYleaders who have previously endorsed Schneiderman did NOT endorse him in the GENERAL election”.

AP Article: Bedbugs Threaten NYC’s $30B Tourism Industry

Monday, October 25th, 2010

New York City’s bedbugs have climbed out of bed and marched into landmarks like the Empire State Building, Bloomingdale’s and Lincoln Center, causing fresh anxiety among tourists who are canceling Big Apple vacations planned for the height of the holiday season.

Some travelers who had arranged trips to New York say they are creeped out about staying in hotels and visiting attractions as new reports of bedbugs seem to pop up every few days. And officials in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration are concerned about the effect on the city’s image and $30 billion tourism industry.

The discoveries of pests at high-profile places are often not full-blown infestations, or even in public areas. Bloomingdale’s reported finding exactly one bug in the famous department store, the Empire State Building had them in the basement and Lincoln Center’s were in a dressing room.

But those reports, along with bedbug discoveries in movie theaters, hotels and clothing chain stores, are causing skittish travelers to call off trips planned months ago.

Industry professionals — who have privately told city officials that they are nervous about bedbugs hurting New York’s reputation — say publicly that they are not aware of any bedbug-related cancellations. But several would-be tourists tracked down by The Associated Press say they are aborting their trips here because they fear the bloodsucking pests.
