Piron Lashes Out at Chareidim: You Opted for Autonomy!

pironEducation Minister (Yesh Atid) Rabbi Shai Piron lashed out at chareidim saying “You made a decision that you want autonomy and to this autonomy carries a price”.

In a query to the minister on Wednesday 3 Adar II from MK Rav Moshe Gafne, the chareidi lawmaker comes to the defense of chareidi schoolchildren. He points out that while the ministry is planning summer camps and programs for students, there will be many who do not benefit simply because they are chareidim and for them, they will be compelled to sit at home.

Gafne cited the law, which compels equal funding for the recognized chareidi students, the same funding enjoyed in public schools. He pointed out that the law says one thing but in reality, the chareidim are treated as second rate as is seen in this case again.

Piron responded explaining there is a public school system which he is working to strengthen and improve, and he welcomes the chareidim with open arms for as long as they accept the curriculum along with the Torah studies. He added that he would be pleased to include all of them in the same programs without any bias regarding their hashkafa but the chareidim have opted to segregate themselves.

“Those who opted to be a part of the public education system enjoy many benefits. They are not subordinate to the teacher unions and have an organized schedule, calendar and much more. To come now in tears talking about the rights that others receive crying to give it to you too — but don’t compel me to include core subjects and don’t compel me to fulfill my obligations and don’t compel me to hire only certified teachers and etc. Permit me to say I was not moved. There are those of us who do the math and decide it is worthwhile” the minister lashed out back at Gafne saying.

He continued “If you wish to hold a genuine dialogue about a real partnership, I commit to not harming your principles and unique cultural values but you must also accept upon yourselves the values of the public education system and then the system will owe you something as well. You as political leaders and rabbonim accepted a decision that you seek autonomy and this is the price. If you wish to be a part of the dialogue then it includes the honey and the stinger alike”.

  1. The three hareidi parties that sit in the Kenesset are used to the idea of getting government money, which they have sought and accepted. Finally, due in part to Piron’s party, the “bill” has come due in the form of conscription and national policy’s to prevent Israel form become too hareidi.

They should get used to the approach of the anti-zionist hareidim who never get suckered into accepting zionist money. Don’t ask for zionist money, don’t consider paying attention to their other demands. If one is worried about a criminal luring a child with candy, one needs to warn children not to accept candy from stangers, especially strangers who want to encourage the child to come with them for more candy.

  2. the following is a quote from maran gaon uzeinu sar hatorah rav chaim kanievsky shlita in regard to batit yehudi mitzvah lefasem

  3. Interesting analogy he chose to use:
“…it includes the honey and the stinger alike”

So he’s admitting there is a stinger, too.

In other countries, there is a concept of parochial/private schools that are given certain services just like public schools are given.

  4. This is no “laughing” matter! Yes, thanks to Lapid,Lipman,& Piron, the Chareidem ARE being discriminated against and are treated like 2nd rate vermin! At least Shia’leh is admitting that its payback time & the Chareidim will now be “punished”! This has a lot of similarities as to what DeBlasio is doing to the Charter Schools, right here in New York!

  5. It’s amazing how certain segments of the dati leumi community can be worse than chilonim. The fellow is supposedly a “Rabbi”. Hashem Yerachem.

  6. due in part to Piron’s party, the “bill” has come due in the form of conscription

This has ZERO to do with army conscription, the Charedei school system is either part of the Ministry of Education or not!!! Public or private. There are many services available to public school children that are not given or offered to private/parochial students. Why is this even newsworthy? You have a choice and the choice is there!!

  7. People need to always understand two sides of an argument and in this case prion is 100% right. We want private schooling so we can do our own thing so we can not complain that when a child is part of their system he gets benefits we have the opportunity for those benefits if we want.

  8. #3. Your statement is not quite accurate. Cities give certain services directly to students with some disabilities. They don’t give money directly to Yeshivos.

When government money is given for anything, there are requirements and strings attached. You accept the money, you follow the guidelines, if not, don’t take the money. Minister Piron is right and the same holds true no matter what the country.
