Israeli defense officials estimate that the IDF now has operational control over roughly 70% of the Gaza Strip, with that figure expected to grow in the coming months as Hamas continues rebuilding its forces, recruiting terrorists, and preparing for the possibility of renewed fighting, according to a report by Walla.

The assessment comes as the security establishment grows increasingly concerned that Hamas is dragging its feet on implementing the current agreement while continuing to entrench itself across parts of the enclave. Officials believe the terror group is using the current period to reorganize, recruit additional terrorists, and prepare for a future confrontation with Israel.

At the same time, Southern Command chief Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor is overseeing three parallel efforts in Gaza: countering threats along the security perimeter, expanding operational control and strengthening defenses, and preparing for the possibility of another military campaign against Hamas.

According to the report, the IDF and Shin Bet continue to maintain a list of targets linked directly or indirectly to the October 7 massacre, including individuals involved in holding Israeli hostages. Daily intelligence assessments are conducted to coordinate efforts between Military Intelligence, the Shin Bet, and Southern Command, with a focus on preventing attacks and eliminating emerging threats.

The report states that the IDF is continuing to expand roads and access routes throughout areas under its control, strengthen positions along the security perimeter, upgrade intelligence-gathering capabilities, and reinforce both regular and reserve forces. Security officials believe operational control could expand further in the coming months if Hamas continues refusing to disarm while rebuilding its military capabilities.

In parallel, planning is continuing for the proposed U.S.-backed “Green City” project in the Rafah area. According to Walla, the initial phase would include housing and infrastructure for approximately 50,000 Palestinians who pass security screening before entering the zone.
