NYPD: Menorah Knocked Over, Damaged At Upper East Side Park

aThe NYPD Hate Crime Detectives are investigating after a menorah was knocked over two nights in a row at an Upper East Side park.

Police believe the menorah at Carl Schurz Park was toppled on purpose both Saturday and Sunday nights.

Rabbi Elie Weinstock of the Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun said they plan to light the menorah again at 8 p.m. Monday.

Police said they don’t have any surveillance video or witnesses. They believe the same person is responsible for both incidents.

  1. This is the second report that I’ve seen of vandalism to one of these menorahs & its only the second night of Chanukah. I propose stopping these public lightings. What’s the point anyway??

  2. This should be a lesson to the proponents of placing Menorahs in public places. We have no business doing it, period. Why don’t they understand that we are in galus, the more you smear it in their faces, the more they hate us? Don’t give me this nonsense about kiruv, spreading light and any other reasoning. If Chazal did not require us to place giant Menorahs in public squares , Noone has a right to do it today. Yes, there is pirsumei nisa, at ones a window or door, not at airports or parks or atop of one’s car.

  3. These displays are as much menorahs as black plastic boxes are Tefillin, yet nobody is going around putting plastic boxes on people. There is simply no authentic (i.e. Jewish) source for this sort of display and ceremonies which can only (un)reasonably be compared to other public lightings this time of year. Lo l’chinam that the Shulchan Aruch says in our days we light in our houses.

  4. So sad, that after 40 years or so of these public menorah lightings, where literally THOUSANDS of yidden were reminded of their yidishkeit and did the mitzva – lit chanukah menorahs (wait, isn’t that what the words pirsumei nisa mean?..) And were even saved from SUICIDE because of attending a menorah lighting in a mall (see story with r’ moshe bryski), that there are still some ignorant critics who find enjoyment in mocking this wonderful display of Jewish PRIDE.. Moshiach is needed urgently..
