VIDEO AND PHOTOS: The Search For The Missing Talis And Tefillin Is Underway At An Upstate NY Garbage Dump

tef[VIDEOS & PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE]

The search for the pair of Talis and Tefillin at a New York garbage dump in underway. Around 100 volunteers are geared up in protective suits, and are sifting through tons of smelly trash in the hopes of locating the missing pair.

As YWN had reported last week, the Tallis and Tefillin, owned by a melamed, were lost in the Lee Garden Shul, a Satmar Shul on Lorimer Street, in Williamsburg. In that shul close to 2000 people daven and learn there each day. The Tefillin were placed securely in a cubby outside the Beis Midrash. On Wednesday morning, after the Tefillin were placed in the cubby, the melamed went to teach.

Slowly, the Tefillin bag inched its way forward. There was a garbage can next to where the Tefillin was kept. At precisely 7:09 PM last Wednesday, the Tefillin gently slid down into the garbage can. There were people standing around, but no one had noticed.

The melamed looked for his Tefillin the next Thursday to no avail. He borrowed Tefillin. Finally on Motzai Shabbos, they looked at the security camera footage. That is when they saw the Tefillin slide off.

The garbage was picked up Shabbos morning.

The askanim went into action. Rabbi David Niederman from United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg was contacted who got in touch with the sanitation department. The sanitation department has a transfer hub located at 221 Varrick Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

The garbage got mixed into thousands of tons of other New York City garbage.

By the time this information was found out, the askanim were informed that the garbage was already on the train headed toward a landfill upstate – in Fairfield, New York. They were able to narrow it down to fifty specific railcars, containing some 1000 tons of garbage. The garbage will arrive on Friday in the landfill in Fairfield on Friday morning.

Waste Management is the company that outsources New York City’s garbage, which ends up being transferred to a landfill upstate.

The sanitation department itself searched for it, and the managers of the landfill graciously gave the askanim one day – next Monday permission to search for it. The content of the railcars will be spread out at a large site at the landfill where the content of the fifty railcars will be spread out to look for the Tefillin. Over 100 volunteers will be needed for the day. The volunteers will be outfitted with special rakes and safety gear in order to work at the landfill. Food and travel expenses will be covered.

The Askanim and friends are now looking for volunteers for next week that are ready to join the search. They hired a local employment agency near Fairfield to assist in the search.

A special chessed fund was established.

  1. Why did they wait until Motzei Shabbos to look at the footage? If he always kept his Talis/Tefillin in shul obviously that was the place to search.

  2. With all respect, is the time (in terms of bitul torah) and resources (in terms of funds that might have been used for some of the critical needs advertised here daily on YWN) expended in this search for one set of teffilin really worth it?? Also, what is the relevance of those photos of boxes of cookies and cakes to this story??

  3. I think we are missing the point… Mi Kamocha, how beautiful are the Jewish people and how much do we love Hashem and his mitzvahs, that we would dedicate our precious time to seeking a pair of holy tefillin and tallis…

    Mi Kamocha..

    Back to Donald trump news?

  4. As usual Gadolhadorah criticises things that yiden who don’t belong to her view of yidishkeit do. If it were religious zionists doing such a thing it would have been a marvellous act of chesed and safeguarding holy items. The pictures with cakes and cookies is to show how many people got involved and sponsored the yiden volunteering in the search with food and drink

  5. To 4:

Thank you. I think you are saying the importance of “saving” the lost tefillin outweighs the opportunity costs of time and dollars involved, period. Thats fine and and a very helpful answer, without the editorial comment about religious Zionists etc….sometimes less is more….

  6. Gadolhadorah- the point of searching for the tefillin isn’t because the guy can’t afford a new pair. It’s for the kavod of the sheim hashem written on this pair that is missing. A garbage dump a terrible place for something so holy to end up. These yidden are doing all they can here and should be commended for doing so.

  7. As Rabbi Pinchos Katz a Satmar Dayan writes in his letter ” Since the refuse, carting companies were contacted, and they offered their full cooperation and assistance,it would be a Chillul Hashem if the community did not come forward with volunteers and resources. I also remind readers that Dovid Hamelech was hesitant in throwing in the Shem hashem into the Tehom and saving the world from flooding until he received an express Heter to do so

  8. Poster #9: gadolhadorah has nothing to be ashamed of. She asked a question that I myself asked UNTIL I saw the letter of the Satmar Dayan.
