Mitt Romney: Obama Born Here, Period

Mitt Romney forcefully said Tuesday night that he believes President Barack Obama was born in America and that “the citizenship test has been passed.”

“I think the citizenship test has been passed. I believe the president was born in the United States. There are real reasons to get this guy out of office,” Romney told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow the day after he formally announced that he’s exploring a run for the White House. “The man needs to be taken out of office but his citizenship isn’t the reason why.”

Kudlow asked Romney about the issue because Donald Trump — the billionaire real estate mogul — has been all over TV questioning whether Obama was really born in in the United States and is therefore constitutionally allowed to hold the nation’s highest office. Trump’s claims have driven the “birther” issue back into the national spotlight — and a recent Fox News poll found that 24 percent of voters believe Obama wasn’t born in the United States, while 10 percent aren’t sure.

In the wide-ranging interview with Kudlow — Romney’s first TV appearance and press interview since announcing his exploratory committee — the former Masachusetts governor stood up for his record on health care, taxes and other issues.

Despite Kudlow’s often combative questioning, Romney stuck relentlessly to his economy-and-job-creation message, refusing to criticize Ben Bernanke even as the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy has become a frequent target on the right.

“I think Ben Bernanke is a student of monetary policy; he’s doing as good a job as he thinks he can do,” Romney said when Kudlow asked what kind of job Bernanke is doing. “I’m not going to spend my time going after Ben Bernanke. I’m not going to spend my time focusing on the Federal Reserve.”

Kudlow’s tough questioning on health care came on the five-year anniversary of Romney’s enactment of a sweeping overhaul in Massachusetts. Democrats have been holding celebratory parties and events to “thank” Romney for enacting what they call a model for national reform.

“I’m very happy that the Democrats are celebrating,” Romney said. “Not one Democrat called me and said, ‘OK, what did you do in Massachusetts, what would you do again, what would you do differently?’

“I would have said what you’re putting in place in the nation is unconstitutional, it’s bad law, it will not work,” he added.

Romney again offered what has become his standard defense of the plan: “One thing I learned is this, which is that you don’t take ideas from a state and try to impose them on a whole nation.”

  1. Dear Mr. ObamaRomneyCare,

You go with the wind. Whichever way the wind blows so goes Mitt Romney……

“I think the citizenship test has been passed. I believe the president was born in the United States. There are real reasons to get this guy out of office,” Romney told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow…

And how does Mr.ObamaRomneyCare substantiate his claim?

  2. What citizenship test has been passed? Since when is belief sufficient to prove citizenship? If Obama wants to silence the critics, he can just show his birth certificate – or maybe he can’t?

  3. Romney is just another bush rino who stands for a one world government and no concern for Americas sovereignty ,”bernake is not our problem” are you kidding? bernake and the feds are the one and only problem this country has! . A tea party candidate is our only hope, i believe Ron Paul should be on top of the list, 3 years ago everyone thought he was looney, now we see hes our only hope

  4. I do not think Mitt could win (he instituted “obamacare” in Mass. after all) and I am not a big fan, but it is about time someone focuses on some more relevant issues than the conspiracy theory around Obama’s birth. Btw when my children were born they never got a birth certificate, they only got a certificate of live birth. I am not even sure what the difference is. I doubt most of the conspirators know either. BTW I did not vote for Obama, just trying to be intellectually honest, which unfortunately seems largely absent from the political debate these days.

  5. “Btw when my children were born they never got a birth certificate, they only got a certificate of live birth. I am not even sure what the difference is.”

There is no difference. My own birth certificate from Pennsylvania is called something still different, a “Certification of Birth”.

Romney is honest regarding the birthers but he has changed his positions a lot over his career. And I can’t imagine how nominating an investment banker is a winning strategy for 2012.

  6. When someone doesnt reveal the proper documentation required, and asked of ALL Americans, from time to time; then it is logical to assume they-dont-have-it. This is not a game. Obama wont/cant show it; he doesnt have it.

  7. #4…you’re right, most of the conspirators don’t realize that Obama is an American citizen without question since his mother is an American citizen. No matter where she bore him, he is an American.

However, the only real issue that I find is that the qualification for presidency requires(?) that if a baby is born outside of America, then BOTH of his parents must be American….which I doubt any conspirators would be able to tell you that this is the real issue at hand.

  8. Why does Obama use a dead man’s social security number? Romney’s only qualifications for president is his hair.

  9. #8 mark levin,

I got both a drivers’ license and a passport with my Pennsylvania “Certification of Birth” that has much less information than does President Obama’s “Certification of Live Birth”.

  10. Romney is showing integrity in this situation. I hope he has a good future whether it be in office or elsewhere.

  11. Romney also believes Joseph Smith is a prophet because a few people said so. That’s why he believes Obama’s legitimate because one person in Hawaii’s Dept of health says so. Some kids believe Mickey Mouse is real.

  12. I am with Charlie (for once!) on this issue. Before anyone says that Obama has never produced a birth certificate, please explain the difference between a certificate of live birth and a birth certificate, because I do not know of any difference. As I stated I highly doubt most conspirators know.
