    Hello dear members of ynw cr! I am a bochur in you’re average yeshiva doing quite well and I find the 3 hours of secular studies everyday tedious and boring, when asked my teachers fail to answer why it’s important for me to know that people were depressed in 1928 or a triangle has 3 corners ect I hear for the nerdy chevra on their spare time they can be told about these extremely enlightening subjects since they seem to get a kick out of it. But for the rest of us we really feel like it’s a waste of time and we would appreciate if we can put something else instead for those few hours (nap time efshar)
    This being said I hope the askanim of the CR will be able to help and fix our school system were counting on you!!!

    The coffee room askanim can only try to get the teachers and rabbonim of your Yeshiva to give you the secret recipe of more coffee to make it through English each day

    @5781

    Your command of the English language shows that wherever it is that you learned it, it was “optionary”.

    If one doesn’t understand some aspects of American and world history, once is at a serious disadvantage in functioning outside of the frum community (including having to talk to goyim, or do business with goyim). You will often make decisions and say things that make you appear foolish, and perhaps hostile. Consider: Knowing that the American economy has had frequent rises and collapses so that just since the economy is a mess (or not) it won’t stay that way; ability to do basic math in order to shop and pay bills, or calculate how much carpet you need to cover a room; knowing African Americans tend to have a “chip on their shoulder” (for similar reasons as most of us do, it has to do with history). A good argument could be made that we need a “frum” curriculum for secular studies focusing on what frum Jews need to know to function in the goyim’s world, but that’s a different issue.

    There is no such word as optionary!!!
    English and grammar and punctuation should be absolutely mandatory so I should not have to take a Tylenol after reading some of the comments on YWN!!!

    I am fundermentally disagreeable. Speaking the English is most impotant in order to be societally fungible.

    Just wondering, is this the same kid who started a thread on the ‘dismantlement’ of Israel? You seem to be skilled enough in secular studies to open two social media accounts under different names… Something which no doubt helps you deal with being bored…

    Sefer Pele Yoetz is a classic Mussar sefer.

    Sefer Pele Yoetz, Perek Catav, teaches that
    every Jew must learn how to read and write;
    and not only Lashon HaKodesh [Hebrew],
    but also the language of the land that he lives in.

    Ah yes, because removing a shared language in a diverse society is definitely the best way to improve communication, right? I get the sarcasm, but let’s be real—language isn’t just a formality, it’s how ideas, needs, and cultures are exchanged. English may not be perfect or native to everyone, but having a common language helps us function as a society. Optional English? That sounds like optional understanding. Good luck with that at your next team meeting, airport, or emergency room.

    Everyone needs a basic understanding of English, arithmetic, basic science, government (especially the judicial system), and what your rights are as an American. These are difficult times and you need these skills to defend yourself.

    SUPER OBVIOUS: Secular studies is there to provide a break from Limudei kodesh. That’s the main reason they exist today. It’s not about learning how to misspell optional.
