A biography of Rabbi Baruch BenHaim was published. The author devotes part of the book to an extended series of events in the Syrian community involving a Rabbi who is designated by the name “Muad”. The description of this “Muad” is less than charitable. Many of the readers of this book in the general non-Syrian community will not necessarily know who “Muad” was. Some of us know who he was and consider him to have been a great Talmid Chaham. I believe that the treatment of “Muad”, in the book, was disgraceful and a Bizui Talmid Chaham. It is my understanding that the author did not contact the family of “Muad” to get their side of the story. It seems to me that this was a cheap shot at somebody who is no longer alive and cannot respond (although I don’t think he would have lowered himself to bother to respond). This book is typical of the Artscroll “Biography” which has little regard for facts; it wants to “inspire”. It seems that in the minds of the publishers, the stories of great people are not enough to “inspire”; there has to be a myth created which does not always line up with the facts. Has anybody else read this book and do you agree?
