Someone asked how to live frugaly.
Live with the bare minimum. In 2025 there is always a cheaper knockoff of whatever product you use and you can still live a great life.
Buy clothes, appliances, big items second hand
Or save up _slowly_ until you have enough.
Or use klarna or a credit card (only for big items)
Stop using credit cards for _small_ items. Take cash to the store and only buy _simple_ foods. Give your extra food to a family in need and stop buying so much stuff you don’t need.
Get rid of your phone bill. Buy a kosher phone or kosher phone knockoff and use wifi at home for Whatsapp and ordering items on the internet.

    Who are you None2.0?
Male or Female? Religious affiliation? Married, single, or divorced? Age bracket? City or State you live?
Education level? How did you become so contrarian & cynical? Why do you submit multiple posts one after another rather than one unified post?
Would you care to share your life’s biggest disappointment? Who are you most angry at? What kind of response is most meaningful to you in the coffee room? What types of jobs have you tried? If you could change one thing about the Frum community, what would it be?
I’d like to understand where you’re coming from, what your goals are as a member of this group.

    Sincerely,

    Haimy

This was very laudable in times passed. Many mussar giants lived this way. But does it really make sense in our times? For the effort to live this way, you can simply go to, say, law school, and then work several hours a week and have enough for modest living and learn, saven, or do chesed the rest of the time. I am sure baalei mussar spent more hours walking to pick up bread and water and wash their clothes than that. Chofetz Chaim surely spent more time selling his seforim and had enough time left to learn.

Or is there independent value in living in poverty even if it is so easy to avoid it? another way to ask same question – do we have many examples of Yidden who were rich and then gave it all away to live a life of poverty?

Always ask questions _very_ good point.
But remember what you earn in easy living you give up in time. Less time with family
    Less time with friends
    Less time overall
So living with the bare necessities frees you from something very important
Being a slave to the doller.
    This is not about suffering
But about making money work _for_ you.
    Living responsibly.
It’s not really about difficulty cuz all your needs will be met. You just will become _above_ the whole money thing. You will start to feel that _you_ control the money. Not that your lifestyle controls you.
Bare minimum living is like a muscle. You become stronger. Withstand things better
    Become more responsible.
It’s not really “poverty” it’s just living with only exactly what you need.
If I buy shampoo for 1 doller instead of 7. Now I have more money for food.
If I buy simple foods I have more money for rent
If I cover my rent I have more _freedom_

You can make _more_ money that’s also true. But not everyone has that opportunity. Not always is it feasible. Sometimes going to school doesn’t garenteee an outcome. You need to live within your circumstances and trust G-d and do your hishtadlus. But getting your lifestyle to be bear bones actually gives you a form of control. And freedom. And also everything nowadays is pretty much luxury. Like getting a cheaper shampoo, your not going to suffer. Fake everything still looks and feels real
