As of June 2026, a month from now, all NYC residences with 1-9 units are required to use only official NYC trash bins when leaving trash for curbside collection. Use of any other type of trash can, or no trash can, can result in a ticket. If you haven’t already gotten these bins, make sure to do so before June. Google “NYC Bins” for more information about legal requirements and where to buy these bins.

On a related note, does anyone know of a “trash can gemach” where NYC residents can drop off good condition but now useless old trash containers? Perhaps non-NYC residents can use them. Alternately, any ideas for repurposing old trash containers? It seems a waste that containers which were purchased from Home Depot for nearly $100 each only a few years ago and are in excellent condition are now useless.

Regarding uses for old trash cans, just order free Recycling Decals from the NYC Dept of Sanitation, and use them for recycling…

mmm12345, thank you for that information. I wasn’t aware that recycling and composting could use bins that aren’t official Sanitation Department bins as long as they are labeled. We already bought the new green (paper) and blue (metal and plastic) recycling bins, but hopefully your information will save others some $$$. Paper, metal and plastic actually don’t need to be in bins – they can be set out in clear bags – but it’s neater if they’re in bins.

you can use them to make noise when demonstrating near the mayor’s residence.
