A 60-year-old man was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after drinking a toxic substance inside a shul in Afula.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and found the man suffering from severe burns to his mouth and airway.

Hatzalah and MDA medics provided emergency treatment before transporting him in serious condition to the trauma unit at HaEmek Medical Center for further care.

Hatzalah volunteers Baruch Strauss and Moshe Perlman said, “When we arrived at the shul with an MDA ambulance, we found a man in his 60s suffering from burns to his mouth and respiratory tract after drinking a toxic substance. Together with Hatzalah and MDA paramedics, we provided initial medical treatment before evacuating him in serious condition to the trauma room at HaEmek Medical Center.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
