Israeli police and Border Police officers foiled an attempt Sunday to smuggle four illegal entrants into Israel through the A-Zaim Crossing near Jerusalem.

The operation took place during a joint enforcement activity by officers from the Ma’ale Adumim Police Station and Border Police forces. During inspections at the crossing, security personnel became suspicious of a vehicle driven by a man in his 30s from Eilat.

A search of the vehicle uncovered four Palestinian residents of the territories hiding inside the car. Some were found concealed in the back seat, while others were discovered inside the trunk, apparently in an effort to evade detection and enter Israel illegally.

The driver and the four suspects were arrested at the scene and transferred to the Ma’ale Adumim Police Station for questioning.

Police said they will continue to act with “determination and zero tolerance” against illegal entry into Israel and against those who assist such activity, noting that transporting illegal entrants is a serious criminal offense that can carry a prison sentence.
