What are you doing for Jerusalem Day (Yom Yerushalayim)?
I will be reciting Hallel in shul at Shacharit, and doing extra learning in honor of the brave soldiers through whom we now have access to the Kotel and other parts of the city, and to the One who really made it possible.
June 1, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am #773751Pac-ManMemberThe same things I do every day of the week.
June 1, 2011 6:17 am at 6:17 am #773752AriInMDParticipantI will say Hallel at Shacharit (without a bracha) and talk with my family about the significance of the day. Yom Yerushalayim is not an exclusively Zionist holiday, although I proudly identify as a Religious Zionist. Iy should be a day for all of Klal Yisrael to commemorate our people’s salvation in 1967 from an attempted genocide, as well as the miraculous recapture of our holiest sites.
Because Yom Yerushalayim corresponds with the anniversary of an actual victory, while Yom Haatzmaut merely corresponds with the declaration of statehood, there are some who observe Yom Yerushalayim but not Yom Haatzmaut. (My family observes both.)

Unfortunately, it’s not a legal holiday, so I don’t have off work. I say every year that I’ll take the day off next year, just to spend the day in Yerushalayim. I was there last Shabbat, so that’s some consolation for not being there today.

June 2, 2011 11:40 am at 11:40 am #773756Derech HaMelechMemberFrom the yom tov. Same reason everyone else was saying hallel and davening shabbos pesukei d’zimra.
June 2, 2011 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #773757shlishiMemberDerech: Are you jesting about making havdallah after Jerusalem Day? And I had thought you were not the mizrachi type.
June 2, 2011 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #773758Derech HaMelechMemberI don’t jest.
But I noticed that the more sarcastic I get, the less people tend to realize I’m being sarcastic.
