    Whats called Abusing Chaverim organization?

Calling fifteen minutes before your home and tell the volunteer to wait for you. Knowing your car is half broken and needs a boost to start each time so they call chaveirim each time. Yelling at the volunteer why didn’t you come fast enough. Telling the volunteer to change a flat while you shop. Calling for a tissue stuck in your seatbelt (real thing, no joke) etc etc etc my husband is a volunteer and all these scenarios have happened.

IMOP it is something you should use your brains about. If you are stuck in the middle of no where and it is past the hour that a towing company is open or for someone to come fix it then you can call Chaveirim if they don’t have set hours that they work.

Chaverim ARE malochim, as are the Hatzolah members, too. Our battery died for reasons unknown when we were in a not so comfortable neighborhood early evening. We called Chaverim, but that day they had NO one available at that time (it happens), and I had medication I had to take, and so did my husband, but we waited patiently for an hour, then I called them again to check if anything had changed. No one was available. I said thanks, and just asked them to give us a heads up when someone MIGHT be available. The next thing I know I am getting a call that someone is on the way, and to my great surprise (and a little embarrassment) it was a lcoal hatzolah member, who KNEW it was not a health emergency (except for the need to take medication in the evening), but responded to the Chaverim call anyway, because he knew where we were and that we had trouble, and also that Chaverim had no one free at the time. He gave us a boost, which took immediately, and went on his way. And that is why every time I empty my pushke I give the money to Hatzolah AND Chaverim. They are true tzaddikim and ohavei Yisroel, in a very self-centered world. Hashem should always bless these volunteers.

    Just a little story about chaveirim in BP;

My grandfather a”h was at an advanced age and had an home aid. One day the aid didnt show up and while my grandmother was able to put un his tfilin, feed him, etc. there was no way she could take him out of bed by herself. With my mother being stuck at work in another part of the city she called me wondering what we can do. So from upstate NY I called chaveirim of BP apoligizing that I know that this is not excectly what they do, but they right away sent 2 volunteers and in 5 minutes they saved the day.

Let me just add to the list of abuse perpetrated on the members of Chaveirim. When someone calls Chaveirim and the situation has changed. The car, somehow started –and the help of Chaveirim is no longer needed– the “Customer” just drives off, without calling in to cancel the call for help. When the member shows up and finds no one there, his time and effort are wasted.

My friend’s father is very overprotective of his car. He rarely lets her use it. Once we went out for ice cream, and sure enouigh the car jammed. She was terrified to call her father. We called Chaveirim, they came in a just a couple of minutes and in no time they figured out the problem. AMAZING! (something like the steering wheel being locked…)

most chavairim orgazations have envelopes you can send in or give a donation to the org, but I believe private tipping I ok especially if the member drove out of his way and it costed him gas you can definitely reimburse him for that

    “costed” isn’t a word. It’s “cost”

    The volunteers don’t refuse tips?

I would think if I offered a Hatzalah guy $10 for coming out he would probably refuse it.

Firstly, giving Hatzala 10 bucks is kind of insulting. A call probably costs several hundred dollars, definitely if it was Advanced life support.

Secondly, their official policy is that the do not accept tips, but are happy to take donations for Hatzala.

For the Hatzalah guy’s personal time and gas (coming in his private vehicle — not for Hatzalah organization’s expenses sending out the ambulance, etc.) How is Chaveirim different in that regard?

My point isn’t to advocate tipping Hatzalah guys. On the contrary. I’m questioning tipping Chaveirim guys.

Chaveirim members arent allowed to accept tips for personal use. Any tips they get are used for equipment

    #979158

I am knowink dis guy fin Rockland County somewhere, he calls to Chavyrim and asks them “Vee iz de kover far de grape juice…” He usually gets referred to the mental health hotline.

Then there was the chochom who called Chaverim to ask them to open the front door of a Lexus….that wasn’t his. The chochom even asked the volunteer to start it for him. When the volunteer refused, the chochom went on to start a new organization called “Ganovim” that specializes in this kind of stuff.

What about when Chaveirim does NOT show up? What about when they do not bother to call you back to let you know that they do not have anyone in that vicinity (local Heimishe neighborhood)? Should I feel guilty when I throw their letter in the garbage when they have a fund-raiser?

    True story BTW

challahback, chaveirim doesn’t owe you anything, they do it purely as a chesed and are leaving their wives and children to help out a yid in need. yes, sometimes all volunteers are busy, but you don’t have aright to be upset at them. Do you get upset if you ask someone for a favor and they can’t do it?

    #979161

Listen chalahback chaverim owes u nothing and they do not have to call you back you shall call them back after 10-20 minutes to see the statues if anyone is available, the way chaverim works is with a pager system so even if there is no member in that vicinity (local Heimishe neighborhood)someone might be there soon, isn’t that why you called them? i was once in a vicinity away from the local and after an hour a member was in the area and came to help me. if you can’t wait call AAA

getzel said to give the chaveirim guy a $5 – 10 tip, but sms said they can’t take any tips (other than a donation for the main organization). Can we get clarification on the tipping issue?

    #979163

they can accept a tip, but they can’t use it to buy a slice of pizza, for example. they can only use tips to buy more equipment for chaverim

fairly common, though it’s not expected or anything. at least by my husband. he’s gotten tips anywhere from $5-$50, depending on the person and the job that it was

I’m a Chaveirim member in BP, and I’ve had more crazy stories than the amount of characters that I can type here (and there’s no limit ;)), anywhere from a lady in BP asking me to fix her tire while she takes her Son with another car to the Monsey bus stop, to going to Manhattan for a car lockout, and sitting in traffic (took me over an hour to get to him), and after calling (and texting) me every 5 minutes to ask where I was, had the audacity to scream at me when I got to him…

Regarding the tips, here in BP most members only take tips when they need to buy new equipment, which can be kinda expensive at times (I have close to $1000 worth of equipment), since the organization has no income and therefore can’t buy the equipment themselves…

As far as the amount is concerned, when it’s a local minor issue then no tip is due, but if it’s a flat in the Summer, or you’re somewhere in the Boondocks, it would be nice to show your appreciation, and any amount even a dollar – if given sincerely, will be just enough to say thank you…

As a Chaveirim member for many years, I can attest to you that unlike most of the other organizations, the Chaveirim members conduct their holy work in a low-key and low-profile manner. There are no flashing lights, no radios, no photo-ops, and no kovad to speak of. They come quietly, professionally and unobtrusively.

Leider: Then why the “placards” on the window and the “emboldened” jackets?

    ‘”costed” isn’t a word. It’s “cost”‘

“Costed” is a legitimate word; it’s the past tense & past participle of cost

    Droid

For the safety of the one needing help, similar to one not allowing a utility person into the house w/o proper identification

    #979171

“Costed” is a pseudo-technical term used in place of “got a cost estimate for” and often followed by “out.”

“I costed out the server and I’m not going with OyMommy, even with that discount.” I wonder, in fact, if I heard it from a native speaker, or if it is “hymish” or even South Asian usage.

Droid: Placards are placed in order to (try to) prevent ticketing when double-parking during a boost, etc.

Reflecting jackets are to be used when working on the road (changing tires, boosts, etc.) during dusk to dawn, for safety.

In Lakewood for example the Placards are signed by the head of the police dept. it helps avoiding tickets for speeding to emergencies like children locked in cars etc.. double-parking during a boost, etc.

    and as leider said

Reflecting jackets are to be used when working on the road (changing tires, boosts, etc.) during dusk to dawn, for safety.

lets not forget 2 weeks ago a couple in israel were killed changing a tire.

and chaverim help police fire dept Hatzolah etc when more personal are needed so the need a uniform to be identified

lemayseh, they are here to help us. but it’s a chessed org. so poshut pshat is that we should only use them when we need a favor and wouldn’t call a professional for help. l’mashal: flat tire – you’re not managing very well and yourself it might take you a couple of hours , so you call your friend/brother/neighbor for help and no one’s available, so you call chaveirim. i think that’s fine.

but if you have a flood in your basement and really you’d call the plumber, but why should you spend yiddish gelt on it, so you call chaveirim….

Challahback- yes u should feel bad. As a member of Chaverim I can tell you that sometimes it can get quite hectic with calls coming in and and a call back to you can be overlooked.

Tips: Our Chaverim doesn’t allow us to take any tip for fear that people will hesitate to call if they don’t have money on them. When one offers a tip, we give them an envelope and they send it directly to chaverim office.

A little about the life of a chaverim member: we are here for you whenever you call, personally I’ve crawled out of bed at 2,3,4,5,6 in the morning to change a tire. Boost a battery etc. So if you need us please call don’t matter time of day. In the dead of the night it may be a longer response time, but were glad to be of help to you.

Regarding abusing the Org. Well if you know that ur batt needs a boost every time to start, yeh thats a little.. Also, check ur gas guage so you don’t run out of gas bu if you do we’ll be there. Just some preventive measure so u won’t need us.

I think calling Chaveirim to open a door for a family member when you will be home in 20 minutes is sort of abusing the org.

    #979181

Think first- in Lakewood when you call Chaverim for gas, there is a $20 charge (more than the value of the gas). I’m guessing that’s the reason
