My uncle, who happens to be a shrink, recently informed me of the reason for the nickname. What does the CR think the origin/reason for it is?
August 25, 2011 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #802032TheGoqParticipantMaybe because they reduce their patients problems.
August 25, 2011 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm #802034ronrsrMemberIts a comparison to other people who traditionally work on heads, the headhunters and headSHRINKers of South America, who would shrink their captured heads for trophy, ritual or trade purposes. It is a shortened form of headshrinker, which was once a popular moniker for psychiatrists.
My preferred terminology for a trip to the shrink. Is “a check-up from the neck up.”
August 25, 2011 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #802035Abe CohenParticipantMore like because they reduce their patients wallet.
August 25, 2011 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #802036Abe CohenParticipantAlso it probably is the same reason lawyers are called “sharks”.
August 25, 2011 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #802037Putting my two cents inMemberIt’s the shortened version of the word head-shrinker which is slang for a psychotherapist, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, pscychologist
August 25, 2011 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #802038always hereParticipantheadshrinker
August 25, 2011 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #802039Sam2ParticipantIt’s short for “head shrinker” or “brain shrinker”. I’m not sure where those names come from though.
August 25, 2011 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #802040happiestMemberHappens to be, I hate when people call a therapist a shrink. It makes me feel very uncomfortable. I don’t know why.
August 25, 2011 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #802041HealthParticipantToi – Too bad he isn’t an English subject teacher, then maybe you could learn how to spell and write English!
August 25, 2011 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #802042ToiParticipanto boy. so much funny. i assumed you knew it was a silent “K”.
August 25, 2011 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #802043bein_hasdorimParticipantGoq; obviously if the slang was chosen “because they reduce their patients problems” they would’ve been called “Shrinkers”
Since the title is shrink, I propose that it referring rather to their own intellect which seems to shrink as they practice their profession, requiring them to see other shrinks themselves in the hopes of finding what they seem to have lost over the years.
