I am very appreciative of the work that Chaveirim does. Thankfully, I’ve never had to use them, but I know many people who have. They are a huge help to the Jewish community.
Yesterday, however, I saw something that bothered me. My wife and I were driving to a wedding in Monsey. We used Waze to get directions there, and it took us through the streets of Ramapo. As we approached an intersection, I saw a backup, with flashing lights at the corner. I then saw a chassidish man wearing a yellow vest, attempting to direct traffic at the corner. “Ah, it’s a Hatzalah call,” I thought as I got closer. But then we got to the corner, and I saw the vest – it said Chaveirim on it. There were 3 cars parked with flashing lights, blocking the street – with a flat tire being changed.
Really? To change a flat tire, you need 3 cars and a blocked street? Why? A tire can be changed by one person on the side of a road. Yes, many people don’t know how – so one Chaveirim car with someone trained in changing tires can be a help. But 3 cars??? And why block the street???
Sadly, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this. I once saw 2 lanes on the Verrazano Bridge closed by Chaveirim, also to change a flat. I think that many members only join to be a “macher” – they want lights and sirens on their cars, and want to feel important. But they end up causing a chillul Hashem.
Safety first.
Someone can get killed changing a flat tire.
Is their safety not important? At night changing a tire on the side of the road?
There is a reason for the move over law.
Besides, having more than one person will get the tire changed quicker and the street cleared quicker.
How much ???? is there being on ones knees on the side of the road in dirt.
Do you have the same sentiment for hatzolah members? There are many who do and we know that those are depressed people.
it is a peeve of mine when Hatzloah go the wrong way down a one way street. The streets are already narrow and people are not expecting a car to go the wrong way down the street.
DaMoshe: You are completely misinformed. First of all Chaveirim do not have “Lights and Siren” This Organization has over 275 Chusheve Volunteers helping Yiden 24/6 in freezing weather and hot weather! They are all working people that donate their time for other yiden in a modest unassuming way. They follow rules set for them in any give situation. Even the NYPD calls Chaveirim when they have a car problem. They helped save lives when children were by mistake locked in a car with 85* weather or the bathroom door locked when a child is inside, etc. etc. These yiden are Tzadikim that will help bring the Geulah sooner. You should really apologize for your negative judgmental comments!
As a matter of fact this thread is disgusting and should be immediately deleted, not closed, deleted. Such a lack of gratitude is an embarrassment for the op even if he doesn’t recognize it.
If he wants to apologize, and he should, he can start a new thread.
Chaveirim are the greatest people! Must of us are used to reacting and wait for chas vsholom something bad to happen and then react. People who volunteer for chaveirim without fanfare are working to insure that emergencies do not happen in the first place. Thank you chaveirim!!!!
