How does Prepping fit into Judaism?
There are frum preppers who are preparing to survive an epic disaster.
Wondering how the whole prepping thing fits in with Moshiach and Jewish life.
I take offense at the title because it’s about time someone is offended by something.
Doesn’t it contradict the Aharit HaYamim?
I do not think it is compatible with Jewish teachings, and slightly strange why wouldn’t they prepare for the coming of the Moschiach instead?
Also how could they prepare to survive if they think it will be the end?
Or maybe I have misunderstood the question?
Here’s the true frum view of end-of-the-world prepping.

Rabbi Elazar’s students asked him what a person should do to save themselves from chevlei Moshiach (“the birthpangs of Moshiach” – the upheaval that there will be in the world before Moshiach’s arrival). He answered that they should be involved with Torah study and g’milus chasodim (acts of kindness).
Randomex, as I commented in the other thread…….that’s always the answer to any and every aspect of our lives, yet somehow we all seem perfectly ok with going to work and making a living. Want to know who the most famous preppers are? Noah…….Yaakov Avinu…..Yosef……..just to name a few. Did they supplant Torah with prepping? Surely not. Each had disasters to face and took appropriate actions BEFOREHAND. (Yes yes…Hashem TOLD Noah to prepare….got it) so let’s be consistent: Hishtadlus in finances? Hishtadlus in health matters? Hishtadlus for disasters.
And BTW, who says the prepping you do has to be for a specific cataclysmic event? Hurricanes Katrina…Sandy….Hugo…all local (relatively) disasters. With power outages for days on end, fuel pumps not working…..dont you want to be able to help yourself AND your neighbors? Remember that giant snowstorm that paralyzed NYC some years ago. It’s a no brainer. Yeah….people take it to extremes. Maybe I do to a little, but it pays off in spades. Many frum Jews work in Manhattan, ever consider what you would do if your normal methods to get home were disrupted? How would you reach your family? These are things I think about…..and plan for….and IMHO, so should everyone.
Hishtadlus is a responsibility that was given to us:
“B’zei’as apecho tochal lechem.”
Our health is a responsibility that was given to us:
“Ush’martem m’od m’od l’nafshoseichem.”
Disasters are not a responsibility we have been given,
although when we know that something is coming,
it is certainly wise to prepare for it:
“Eizehu chacham? Haroeh es hanolad.”
Why be limited to what we think we “know” is coming? After the snow debacle some years ago, we “knew” there was another storm coming and busses and trains all across NY were shut down. We got like 6 flakes and 4 raindrops. It was a farce. Better to always have a state of readyness, than be caught unprepared.
I think the title should be changed. Its meaning could be misunderstood, chas v’chalila….
And apparently it is possible to have titles changed, albeit with the haskama and assistance of the moderators.
