Israel Denies Agreeing to Return to Pre-’67 Borders


ywnisrael.israelUS Secretary of State John Kerry has held meetings in Amman, Jordan with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen). While initial reports indicated the senior US official was not optimistic, Abu Mazen returned to Ramallah on Thursday, 11 Menachem Av 5773 signaling he was optimistic regarding a resumption of talks with Israel.

As such, it now appears that Kerry is remaining in Amman as reports from Israel indicate government officials have expressed a willingness to resume talks with the PA on the basis of possibly returning to the pre June 1967 borders with land swaps.

If no breakthrough appears on the horizon by Friday, Kerry is expected to return back to the United States.

This report originated with Reuters quoting “an Israeli source.” Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday afternoon denied any such agreement regarding a withdrawal to the pre-Six Day War borders.
