I preface this by saying I do not know the halacha or even what Judge Judy would say. The following is my personal opinion. He owes him a shtender. Not Shimon’s fault that it costs more now to replace it. Let Reuven build one, look for another one like it that is pre-owned, or pay for a new one. He has to replace it somehow. Its $10 worth is of no value to Shimon if he needed the shtender to be returned to him in the same usable, sturdy condition in which he lent it to Reuven.
