Personally, I’d take a CD over flowers any day. (I’d take a CD over pretty much anything, actually.) 🙂
Seriously though, flowers generally don’t cost as much as clothing, jewelry etc. (I hope!) Often my father will just buy my mother flowers for Shabbos because he is in the mood to buy her something, but people generally don’t want to spend money on expensive gifts every second week! Flowers are just a nice, fairly inexpensive way to show someone you care about them.
