This is a myth. The haskalah started before zionism. Assimilation was in full force well before zionism. In fact Zionism was a shift TOWARDS an embrace of (a form) of Yidishkeit. Herzl was compleyl secular he favored a complete rejection of Yidishkeit. A first. However asfter Dreyfus he changed his mid and favored an acceptace of a form of Judaism.
