Its not clear what kind of place the OP lives in. We dont know if they live in a regular aprtment with a lease, A month to month arrangment in a legal apartment or a month to month arragement in an illegal apartment (usually these are basements)

In an illegal aprtment the landlord might feel more freer to bully the tenant than if there was a written lease
