I don’t recall where I saw it, but I recall seeing in a sefer somewhere that kissing connects the person(‘s neshamah?) to the thing he is kissing. Kissing the hand in particular probably is more kovodig than kissing a cheek.
The Yavetz also brings down to kiss one’s mothers hand upon arriving home from shul friday night.
