These new meters are equipped with sensors which alert the meter officers if a car is still in its spot when the time in the meter expires. This allows them to quickly find and ticket cars as soon as the time in the meter is up. The sensors also automatically reset the meter as soon as a car leaves so that the next driver cannot (heaven forbid) benefit from the remaining time that was paid by the first car.

There also seems to be some shady business with the company that installed them.
