Back in mitzrayim, the only thing that Bnei Yisroel had were the cultural signs of being a different nation- things like language and dress. That’s what kept them being Bnei Yisroel and worthy of being saved. Now, B”H we have mitzvos, so our identity/eternity as Am Yisroel is no longer dependent on or defined by dress and language etc alone.
