Some say that Rav Shimon Sofer waqs so hurt by the disgrace that he died (he was niftar on 17 Adar). You are correct that many copy their rabbanim but that is because they think that they have to do and be everything he isץ IMHO this is also a sign of a poor self-image. The person does not want to be himself but someone else.
