Begin wasnt relgious at all, however he felt when representing Israel he should present a relgious front. Privately in israel he was Mechalel Shabbos and ate non-kosher, but he never did so out of Israel which is one of the reasons many Charedim like him. At least he respected Yiddishkeit even if he wasnt totally frum
