The Midrash says that Avraham Avinu was rewarded with the mitzva of sukkah for his Aishel inviting guests constantly by having them rest under a tree. The Ksav Sofer explains that the tree will not grow without help from above, similarly the open schach teaches us that our support comes from Hashem above.
