The Olelos Ephraim from the Klei Yokor compares the sukkah and lulav to a king who sends his servants overseas to tend a big vineyard. Recognizing that it takes a while to see results, he gives them some small vineyards to support themselves. When it comes to a big vineyard, we need teamwork to make it grow but it will not get destroyed because of crop rotation. The servants seeing that they will not see results on the big vineyard right away and it needs teamwork, they gave up on the big vinyard altogether. To correct this, the king gives two edicts. One, once in a year they have to live in the big vineyard that they should see how it is getting destroyed. Two giving them a symbolism on the importance of teamwork. This parable is based on כרמי שלי לא נטרתי I have not worked on my own vineyard. We spend time on our olam hazeh forgetting about the olam habo, so once in the beginning of the year we have to get out from our house, the olam hazeh, to live in the sukkah, the olam habo. We are also given the lulav and esrug to show the importance of teamwork.
