Rabbenu Bachaye explains that from the first letter of the shevotim’s name multiplied by 1000 e.g. Rauvain, 200,000, we can determine how many Jews were there after the Aigal. Use Josef and exclude Levi. The sum is 597,000 indicating 3000 lost at the Aigal.
