I’m not sure if this is accurate but I’ve heard that when clean shaven Chassidishe bachurim/yungerman would visit him asking for a Bracha he would demand to know why they don’t have a beard since according to tzemach tzedek and other Chassidishe poskim that they follow, hold that having a beard is min HaTorah. When litvishe bachurim/yungerman would ask for a Bracha he would tell them that a segula for a Bracha is to start growing a beard
