Every new strain requires extensive research to isolate, develop that show some degree of efficacy, test on animals and then humans and finally scale up for commercial production. Normally that process may take several years. (The development of anti virals for HIV/AIDs took nearly a decade and still is not really fully effective (Trump is promising a fully effective drug within several years). Some of the HIV/AIDs anti-viral drugs are actually being used now in experimental treatment for the Corona virus. Drug companies wont’ invest hundreds of millions of dollars researching cures for a viral strain that has not yet evolved to create a market for that drug.
