@gadol, just about everything in Israel is politics, from the type of kippa/hat, to the hechsher that you eat to the way you vote. a Dati Leumi will only vote for Mizachi, a Sefardi will only vote Shas, a Litvsher will only got for Degel, a Chasidisher will only vote for Agudah Etc. it is so ingrained there that a Rav really does not need make directives, they just vote because how they vote is self understood.
the endorsement of a Rav can make the difference of winning or losing for example the special election for congress after Anthony Weiner resigned.
