When Unilever acquired B&J, the PA (Purchase Agreement, not Palestinian Authority) included a rather unique provision whereby the B&J directors retained considerable independence to continue pursuing their social activism agenda without interference from the upstream Unilever management. I’m not familiar with the nuts and bolts of the corporate governance but I’m certain there are some limits as to how far that “independence” extends and what recourse there is if Unilever were to breach that agreement and take direct control over B&J.
