They came because there are Jews there that didn’t have any connection to yiddishkeit (who now do BH). As simple as that.

First if all, no they did not purposely put themselves in harm’s ways, they didn’t hear of a war brewing and then said amazing idea let’s move there. They were there for years already, way before any of this started. Many of them are even second generation, the children of Shluchim who now are there on shlichus.
And if you need to know what they need money for? No it’s not to move back to crown heights or Kfar Chabad (yes some of them are in the process of fleeing- but I doubt to those locations. Probably just to the eastern border and to help the Jews there)
The ones that aren’t need to the money for food, not sure how much ur aware but eastern Ukraine is pretty much blocked off by the Russians and there’s practically a black market for food, so the more money they have the more food they can get for the elderly.
