Filtering home water doesn’t cost ‘a fortune’. I’ve lived on wells for the past 30 years and have used a variety of water filter options. I considered installing RO when my home was being built. The quality of the water didn’t warrant it. I have an under sink filter for each faucet, where one would desire drinking or cooking water. My well water is pumped and treated with UV before it goes into a holding tank. Water that is used on my gardens or the pool does not use the water tank and is a separate system. I think that many folks don’t consider the waste involved with bottled water.
