Ashkenazi shofars are made from a ram’s horn while Sephardeshe shofars are made from the the horn of a kudu. To be kosher, a shofar cannot be painted in colors, but my understanding is that it may be carved with artistic designs. Some of the more ornate Sephardishe shofars you sometimes see displayed with silver plated insets across part of their length are not meant to be used for tikias shofer.
