The main issue was a spiritual subjugation. There’s no parallel to the relatively empty sufferings of slave folk elsewhere, and that’s why the Torah doesn’t ban even cruel treatment of slaves – that wasn’t the issue. The issue with mitzrayim was that they wanted us to be like them, and to stifle the holy people of Hashem.
