squeak – if you had email in the 70’s, then your email was either a proprietary system (i.e. MCIMail, CompuServe, etc.) or ARPANet – which until the early 80’s (when it became the Internet) was limited to the military and its contractors (i.e. certain university’s). If you used the net pre-web (i.e. ’91), you must be referring to e-mail, Gopher, FTP, telnet, etc. And until the very late 80’s (when commercialization began), was limited to university’s, government and the military.
